I have heard the "leather used for a bearing" story for 60 years. I have never believed it, but that's just me.....

there's got to be an awful lot of bearing failures out there because of the number of times that story has gotten around! Me? I'd rather push the car by hand than pull the pan down! I did pull a driveshaft down at the side of the road and replace the universal roller bearings on a 51 Ford with tin or aluminum foil. I was scared of the yoke cracking the bearing cap. The rolls of aluminum I had packed in there cushioned the yoke so it didn't obliterate the caps. I drove the next 50 (to home) by being extra careful. The aluminum foil was totally compacted from the pounding it had taken from the yoke, but it held and got me and my Dad home.

Gold Digger,

Please let me know what species of wood was used for the cluster gear. I need some new teeth and my dentist wants money for them.
