Heavy drag on rear drums
Hey guys, yesterday I placed my rear drums on axle. Tightened down and pinned nut. Both washers are correctly in place? Brakes are centered and wedge is backed out all the way(after noticing drag I backed I out). I have a super heavy drag on both rear drums. I used shims on the axles. Greased roller bearings. i hear some grinding noise. am i missing something? Fronts are in great shape and spin freely.

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
Do you have it jacked up and supported under the differential ? Are the service and e brake rods connected? What parts did you change out in the back? Some of the replacement e brake shoes are to thick.

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
Yes it's jacked up under the housing. Rods are not connected. I was about the adjust the rear rods. That's when I stopped. Could the shims have moved into the inner race on the axles. Maybe the drums are rubbing backing plates.

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
The shims only move the drums outward. You need to see where you have metal to metal contact, if you hear grinding.
Can you rotate the drums by hand? Is the tranny in neutral, so you aren't turning both rear drums at the same time? |

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
Hopefully the seal was installed just far enough to get the snap ring in place.
Can you move either brake lever forward enough to tell which brake is doing the binding? Or, are both levers tight, indicating both the parking brake and service brake are too tight? |

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
Are the stands under the axle housings or the center section ?
Can you tell what is rubbing ? Like either the backing plates, e-Brake, service brake ? |

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
I agree with Mitch, you probably need to have the new drums turned down a few thousands. You could take the shoes off and see if they still drag. If the drag goes away that's the issue.

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
I have had problems in the past where the replacement emergency brake lining was too thick for the new drums. One way to check is to remove the drum and remove the emergency brake band. Then reinstall the drum without the emergency brake and see if the problem still exists. If it doesn't, you have found the problem. If it does still exist, then examine the service brake shoes for rubbing.

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
If it is the parking brake being too tight, make sure then ends of the band are as close to the stop tab as possible. If the band is too tight, I'd rather sand the lining than turn the drum. Since it was rebuilt by Randy Gross I would assume he already turned the drums to the correct size.

I think the problem is going be the e brake shoes. If it is what's the best way to sand hem down.

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
apply chalk to the facings and edges of the service shoes and the e-brake band, put hub back on ( no need for the nut at this point), rotate a few times, remove drum, see where chalk is worn off

Re: Heavy drag on rear drums
from your description of a grinding sound, I suspect the edges of the shoes or the E brake band are dragging on the drum. Tbirds suggestion will tell which. I just worked on a car with that problem. The customer installed new e brake bands on new cast drums. The lining on the bands was just a bit too wide and was binding on the drum when the axle nut was tightened. So he ran them loose. Bad idea. I ground the linings flush with the band which solved the problem.
