Default 36 Ford Pickup...

Can anyone help me locate a picture of what the "Spare Tire Bracket" for a 1936 ford pickup looks like?
Does anyone have one for sale.

pgpostman...The 1936 and 1937 pickups used the same spare mount as each other. There was also a locking spare setup for the pickups available for use with the wide-five wheels Ford used from 36-39. The 36 and 37 spare mounting rods like Don Rogers shows above have the single "eye" in the middle of the rod. The 38/9 uses the same spare flange, but the rod has two "eyes" in the middle, not the single one on the 36/7.

PG, Best of luck finding one, they are out there. Be sure the stud hold on spare tire rim will match up with the bolt on the tire carrier.They can vary.

What is the difference between 36 and 35 brackets? I'd like to be able to put 5X5-1/2 wheels on my 36 and carry a useable spare, what's the best way to switch back and forth?

Is there no way to secure it to the bed??? Just saying... looks like an awful lot of pressure being applied to the running board to hold the tire up... What are you asking for it??

Yes we had to get a '35 PU spare tire mounting bracket for our '36 pickup that is running 1946 Ford hydraulic brakes and of course the 1935 wheels and bolt pattern.

Seems like at the time I was looking for a '35 bracket, 1936 spare tire brackets were easier to come by than the '35's were. I suppose because more people were getting away from the wide fives stock setup and had extra '36 spare tire brackets laying around.

I like the looks of stock anyway Both stock and '35 Ford rims look good on a '36 Ford Pickup.

I once said to a friend about our truck 'It has '35 wheels' and he said 'I only see FOUR.' Made sense to me.

Hello pgpostman,

The photos I had attached show the spare tire mounted to the running board only at that time. I was in the process of mounting the bed, so did not have the long bolt and spacer that attaches to the side of the bed installed yet. See Don Rogers post # 10 middle picture of long bolt and spacer for mounting to bed side. I do have the long bolt and spacer and all components are powder coated a chocolate brown, along with a new spare tire cover (not for sale).

1936 ford pickup, when you do get your spare mounted permanently try to have the valve stem up as there is a drainage hole inside the hub opposite the stem area. I beat Mercman from Oz with this comment.

Hello GaryU.

Got it....I did see ALL the posts going back and forth on this issue. I like the valve stem down, so drilled a drain hole 180 degrees opposite original drain hole location prior to having wheel powder coated Red Baron Red.

The 35 pickup spare mount rod was a one year item, making them a bit harder to find than the 36/37 pickup spare tire rod which was used two model years instead of just one. If you wanted to use the locking spare for a 35 pickup on the 36 pickup, correct 35 pickup locking spare assemblies are not the same as the 35 passenger car one and are difficult to find compared to the 35 passenger car locking spare.

Hello oldandtired....I agree with you. I had purchased the '35 spare tire locking hub assembly from a passenger car and had to machine 180 degree apart from original the relief in the hub portion and polished stainless steel cover where the mtg. bracket rested against the hub. Then I had to relocate the little clearance hole 180 degrees apart from original for the spring loaded pin that holds the cover plate for the key lock. Now the mtg. bracket goes straight up and over the spare tire to attach to the backside and the key lock cover is in the horizontal upright position.

Early 35 passenger cars and pickups used the same locking cap until about Feb of 1935 when the locking strip was introduced. As has be mentioned before the strap interfered with the tire sitting in the running board dip. To fix this, the cap and strap were shifted from the 6 o'clock position to the 4 o'clock position to allow the strap to clear the running board. The stainless skin and lock access cover had to be repositioned also. The attached archive drawing shows both caps. The A1 and A2 designations specify both the Hurd lock cylinder and Briggs & Stratton

to 1936 ford pickup ……. Very nice set up on your spare mount. I do not mean to hi-jack this thread but isn't your bracket upside down ? There is another thread here about the valve stem being in the correct position at the TOP as the vehicles left the factory. You will notice a tiny drain hole on the inside of the hub that will tell you the correct position of the spare wheel.

to al's28/33....Thank you for the compliment about the Very nice set up on your spare mount. No problem with hi-jacking this thread. Yes, Don Rogers post #21 above clarifies the correct position. I did see years ago a '35 Ford pickup that had the valve stem in the down position and the bracket going straight up and over the spare tire. I liked the looks of it so I did the same. I also drilled a drain hole 180 degrees from factory.
