Question Manifolds

I am about ready to put my intake and exhaust manifolds back together and button up another project. My question is what goes between the two? There appeared to be some kind of material between them but not much of anything was left. It seems to me there should be some kind of insulation here and maybe there is a gasket or something that I'm not aware of out there.

Thanks ahead
Phil

Nothing goes between the manifolds. It should be metal to metal. insulation would not be good, the intake needs to warm, especially with ethanol adultrated gas.

There isn't anything that goes between them. It's mainly meant for heat transfer. It is usually recomended that they be loosely fitted until they are torqued down against the block.

(Purdy beat me to it!)

Thanks guys

What I thought was material was probably just rust scale. I was thinking about keeping the fuel cool and not about warming.

There isn't anything between the manifolds, but its a good idea to bolt them together and have the two surfaced as one assembly. w

When bolting them together prior to surfacing, place the manifolds loosely bolted together on the studs to get all the slots lined up, then tighten the two bolts that clamp the manifolds together. Then remove the unit for surfacing

I would suggest that you at least once A year take the two bolts out and put some never seise on them, that way you will never have to worry about it.Excersising these bolts will make a big difference down the road. The two bolts i refer to are the two in the middle, after some time they fuze together taking them apart from time to time help to keep the bolts from freezing together.

drive shaft daves suggestion has an alternative. if you choose to do nothing, then someday you may have to rework the exhaust manifold when the holes strip out, or the bolts break off. I have drilled out the exhaust manifold, rethreaded for a 1/2 inch thread stock plug, then redrilled a centered hole for original fastner. Real tedious. Bob
