Default Cut out question.

Removed the cut out from a generator we have in the shop. Removed the cover for inspection. There were two pieces of solder loose inside. One end of the inner parts looked like it got very hot. The metal coating was blistered.
Is the cut out bad?? No way to check till the engine is reassembled and started.

Original or reproduction---- most of the original ones need points cleaned and adjusted, the reproduction ones more often are burned up , melted solder connections inside, post a picture

Bob -

If the coil coating is blistered, it's time to replace it. That coating is the winding insulation.

You might want to think about a diode cutout, or a Fun Projects regulator if you can get one.

If going the diode cutout route, be certain to get one for the polarity of the vehicle (Positive ground if original)

I tired to get one of Fun Projects items for some time. They don't answer emails and their web site says they are out of stock.

They are always out of stock.
I purchased one in July 2019. Very satisfied with it.
I would try calling Bill Devine - number is on their website.
