Good morning,
After removing the differential and universal will I have to remove the brake cross shaft to remove the transmission from the car? Engine is staying in place.

You don't have to remove the cross shaft.

Removing the brake cross shaft does help some when re-installing the ujoint and rear end . It lets you line up the splines . It can be done with the cross shaft in place but for me it seemed easier with it removed . Norm

Al,
I would NOT remove the cross shaft. If you take off the U-joint by using a 9/16 on an extension you can remove the U-joint and as jackson said have ample clearance.

I like using some alignment pilots ( bell housing bolt size with heads cut off and tapered) to help in aligning it back so you don't torque the clutch disc and it's overall easier. I think about 2 1/2 to 3 inches I believe is good on the alignment bolts. Screw one in on each side.
