Re: GPS on 6VDC?
I use a "TomTom"
It was the first TomTom ever to be available The one prior to TomTom-One 20 years old ! Still going strong (bought with Data-level 18 and actually updated to data-level 981) Runs great on 6 volt, but doesnt fill its battery. To find tiny roads while going distance over here, i use a "Tripy2" I guess this aint availlable in US. Tripy2 was made for dessert-rallies on motorbikes and goes 14 hours on own batteries I even manage to fill the battery of my smartphone in the A. As so, any Smart-Navigation should work there (but i never tried). Have fun Christoph BTW Might be interesting to know, which one you tried without success. |

Re: GPS on 6VDC?
My Garmin works fine on 6 volt, you just have to change the polarity to the plug in if you are running stock positive ground.

Re: GPS on 6VDC?
I have an older Garmin Nuvi model. I tried wiring it directly to the battery (polarity correct )and it won't charge the unit.

Re: GPS on 6VDC?
Try the Ulysse Speedometer app. Uses GPS on your smartphone. Accurate and easy. Runs for hours on your normal phone battery.
But for really long tours, I built a little cigarette lighter adapter with a 7.2V R/C battery. Use that for 12 hours, then recharge in hotel room. This strategy keeps all the ugly wires out of your Model A. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ys.speedometer

Re: GPS on 6VDC?
My paper map works great as a liner for the 6 volt battery box and my compass helps find the polarity of the magnets in the magneto on my model T

Paper and a compass work great but my eyes don't much anymore. Besides, it is nice to program them for a nice "sexy" voice giving you directions for a change.

Re: GPS on 6VDC?
It's not about the destination....it's about the journey..
I carry a GPS but I find that I usually just drive GD (General Direction) and then refer to a folding map if I have to find a specific location. If I am going somewhere specific... since it is an old car.. I do it the old way. I look at the maps before I go. I'm a gadget freak but I have been finding I have been getting away from engineering myself from point to point to actually looking at a map and enjoying the ride. That said... most modern GPS use a USB for external power and that is 5 volts. Most will tolerate 6 volts but that choice is at your own risk. I built a small 5 volt regulator that feeds the phone and GPS. |

Re: GPS on 6VDC?
I have asked this question in the past but did not get a solution.
Is there any GPS or can it be done on Google maps to PRE select the route which I would like to take? I do have a iPad. Thanks for any comments. |

You can export that custom route to SOME GPS makes and models, not all. So do your homework on that feature before you buy a GPS, if that's what you'd like to do. I learned after I bought my Garmin Nuvi 1350 that it does not have this feature. When I replace it I will get a model that does. It's also a bit of work to transfer the route to the GPS. If you want to use Google Maps on your iPad as your GPS, I don't see why you can't modify the route and then start following it. but I don't have an iPad so I have never done it myself. You'd have to experiment.

Re: GPS on 6VDC?
I have a Garmin Nuvi 2555 LMT and it all works fine on 6-volts. I mounted a plugin on the floor board just behind the transmission with wires with clips on each end so if I want to remove the floor I can detach them. Interesting, the speedometer matches the speed to a "T".
