Be careful, and don't force it. I had a column crack in two, but below were the throttle and timing arms poke out of the column under the hood.
It is not common, but it happens...

Awesome descriptions. Thanks guys. Anyone know what the correct length should be? From the looks of the rod if it's a repro it's a REALLY old one. I'll see if I can get it straight and give the column a twist.
