Default Exhaust tail pipe

Does anyone know the reason Henry Ford didn't extend the exhaust tailpipe out farther? It seems odd to have it so short.

If you're worried/concerned about fumes, there is a tailpipe extension available from some of the vendors, I believe it was used on station wagons. FWIW

The station wagon extension brought the tailpipe to the center of the car and close to the end of the body. I have tried living with that arrangement for a few years and now run the tailpipe to the right rear corner. Not so much exhaust when backing off.

i would assume its the same reason modern cars use just barely enough wire to wire things up. that extra inch costs them X amount of money per car that they would rather have.

is there much backpressure or would a longer pipe cause too much? i thought the delivery's also had extensions....

The A mailtruck chassis had an extended one piece pipe. I believe Aries has made them, but not sure.

I've often wondered the same thing, why the short pipe? A straight extension sure won't affect back pressure...maybe the system was that length to fit in a crate made for other parts for shipping? I know I've heard the story of the floorboards cut up from a crate Ford used to ship bodies.

Got to ask - so how short is a 'Standard' pipe - where would it stop on a coupe in relation to the rear end please ?
