Default reverse idler gear shaft

Today I would like to stop the oil dripping out of the rear of the transmission of my Phaeton with the transmission seal kit, what I've already done on my Town Sedan a few years ago. So no big deal, I've thought. Big mistake! I didn't watched the reverse idler shaft, when I pulled the old shaft retainer. Together with the retainer, I pulled the reverse idler shaft about 1/2 inch. When I pushed it back, it slipped so easy, that I pushed it 1/2 inch to far inside. Not good! Now it sits on the right place again, but no more shifting into first gear. Unless I don't heard any sound of fallen gears or other parts when I pushed and pulled the reverse idler shaft, I probabely caused a misalignment or a kind of mess I don't know.

Before I open the transmission and look into it the first time of my life, do I have to watch for springs, falling gears or other additional mess?

Joe, are you trying to shift into first gear with the engine running? Sometimes when trying to shift with the engine NOT running, the gears will not mesh.

I don't see how what you did would do anything, Even if you pulled the reverse idler gear shaft all of the way out (which it sounds like you didn't) and the gear dropped, I don't think you would be able to get the shaft back in without getting the gear back in place.

When you pull the top off, nothing will fall out.

I don't think you have the forks in the right places.

Jim, I don't think he ever had the shift tower off.

But Joe, ensure you get the shift forks lined up when you DO take the shift tower off and then go to reinstall it.

Just pull the trans top off and push it back into place. Ensure shift forks fall correctly into place on the sliding gears.
Not a big deal …

Nope, didn't tried to shift with engine running, cause I feared broken pinions then

Yeah, never had the gearbox open before (or any other gearboxes)
I'll open the gearbox tomorrow and what happens
But with you as a guide, I'm very happy!

Shifting was always easy before, although with not running engine. But I did it what you mentioned. Sweat like a dog when I cranked the engine for a second, no bad sound out of the gearbox, cranked it for some more seconds, then finally started the engine. All gears at the right place.

Awesome joe. Glad I could save you some work. I figured since you never had it apart there could be anything wrong. The Model A gear box is as simple as they come. Sometimes when the gears are stationary the teeth don't line up correctly.
