Default 1936 Column Drop

The column drop for my 36 pickup needs all new guts. I think I managed to save the stock Hurd lock cylinder (I won’t really know until I get a key made) but everything else is junk. I’ve found complete rebuild kits for 34 but not for 36. I have found places that sell a few pieces but far from everything I need.

Does anybody know if there is a kit or all of the individual parts for the ‘36 drop available somewhere, or will parts from the ‘34 kit work?

Thanks!

I've never seen a kit available for a '36 column drop. From a cost standpoint you might be better off finding another complete column drop that's in better condition than what you have now.

I agree with John, if the internal parts are bad another drop is in order.

To add to John and Terry's comments,, The 36 pickup drop is the same as the passenger car except for color. All internal components are identical.

I have this and can't remember if its 36,37.35-37 use the chrome end cap. Some 35's use the bullseye lever like a '32.A hole would have to be drilled for the lever that gets pressed in and a hole for the switch pin. On Ebay there is a seller that has the end cap in SS and another seller selling the switch pin.At one time Drake sold the end cap and lever.I also have the correct lock cyl w/2 keys.

Here is a complete unit on EBAY now.Might be the way to go like JM and Terry says.

Thanks for the help guys. I do have a good ‘37 drop but rather than sacrifice it for parts, I think I’ll just look for a complete drop for my ‘36.

The internal parts for the '36 pickup drop are different from the internal parts of the '35- (early '36); where the detent screw is closer to the column, and the "off position" is up (like the passenger cars). The '36 pickup has the detent screw further to the right. The '37 pickup is like the '36 pickup with "on position" up, like the '37 passenger cars (except the detent screw for the '37 passenger car drop is on the bottom of drop, and therefore does not share the same internal parts). Many subtle differences in the drops between '35 and '37. Unless building for "show", there are probably good options for swapping the whole column drop assembly between years and bodies/models and still function properly. Hope this hasn't muddied up the thread.

I am attaching a summary sheet of the evolution of the column drop from 35 thru 37. Please note that the 48-3675-A drop was black and used on all commercial vehicles 35 thru 36. There was little likelihood that the 37 drop was used on commercial vehicles since it was brown in color. The internals of your drop should be common to most 35-36 drops and fairly easy to acquire.

Don Rogers: Thank you for all of your informative postings especially the time lines. Great information. Some years of Fords production offered many more changes than other years.
