Default New Motor

Hello, I got a fresh rebuilt, I'm running a B-cam, which would be the better head, A Winfield or a C-head?

Winfield. The C head has barely any more compression than a stock A head.

It depends.. The C head is said to have a 4.6 compression ratio. One dyno test that I have seen shows nearly a seven horsepower increase if the C head is used on an otherwise stock model A engine. The original cast iron Winfield heads could be had in 6 to 1 , yellow head or 7 to 1 , red head . Other ratios may have been available . Either Winfield head would give Way more power. I believe that the new aluminum repro Winfield heads don't have a a counter bore above the pistons and may need to be flycut above the pistons .

Thanks, I was thinking about taking off .060 for some more compression on the C-head, how much is to much, how much are the rods gonna stretch?

Yes, My repro Winfield 7:1 needs to be flycut to clear the raised crown of the standard piston

We also had to do the fly cut, showed the head with the piston size stamped on the head a few issues ago.

The Winfield has by far the better combustion chamber and spark plug location. Flycutting may be needed if your pistons rise above the deck???

The C head is pretty thin. The pistons originally rise about 0.32 above deck height, more if the block has been decked (shaved so as to level). Depending on the brand of head gasket used, i've heard that the gasket compresses to a thickness from .050 to .070. You need a minimum clearance of thirty to thirty five thousants between the piston and head after warm up. My guess is that the counter bore in the head, above the piston needs to be no less than .030 to be on the safe side. It depends on how much the pistons rise above deck height. Because of the thickness of the casting, the F3 head can be shaved more. The F3 heads used the 3 bolt water pump, same as the C head.

I'm running a Lion III Speed head: cast iron, 6.5:1, along with a Stipe IB330, and it's one nice combination! The head doesn't have the traditional look but it sure runs strong and smooth. Just bolt in on and go.
