Float a motors
Have recently torn into a damaged engine caused by blown head gasket and other issues. After removing oil pan noticed crank and timing gear quite dry with no apparent residual oil on the gears. Car is equipped with float a motors. Can the donuts on Float A Motors be sagged enough to tip engine back enough to rob last front cavity of valve chamber to be robbed of oil, which would prevent oil from seeping on to crank and timing gear?

Re: Float a motors
Short answer, no. there is so much oil pumped into the valve chamber, Ford had a return pipe and a hole on the front of the valve area to allow oil to drain over the timing gear. Bad oil pump, maybe but float a motor, no.

Re: Float a motors
Check the pump and the oil path to that area. You never know what you'll find in these old engines.

Re: Float a motors
Don't know why you found them dry, when running there is oil being flung all over the insides of the engine. If you remove a bolt from the front timing gear cover, you will find out!

Re: Float a motors
Thanks for the response. Have already delved into rebuilding oil pump and will test it with a portable drill in a bucket of oil.

Re: Float a motors
You brought up a good question and in the process, suggest installing new FAM donuts from the reputable vendors. They will help maintain proper front end caster and starter crank hole alignment.
