wiper motor question
I have a 1955 Ford Fairlane Victoria and would like to replace the vacuum wiper motor with an electric motor, 12 volt. Will a '56 wiper motor work? Is the location of the original radio a problem? Suggestions on source and price please. Thanks

Re: wiper motor question
I have used the NEWPORT ENGINEERING wiper conversion for several of my mid 50's Fords over the past 20 years. They are a well built unit and have worked perfectly in my cars. ( 57 Ranchero , 57 T bird , recently 55 Ford wagon ). You can just google NEWPORT EBGINEERING and order directly from them. Electric vrs vacuum is the way to go.

Re: wiper motor question
Mine is Newport also, bought through Concourse. I love mine. Except the switch acts kind funky. Best insurance against rain I guess because since installing it I have never needed the wipers.

Re: wiper motor question
I put a Newport in my '54 Ranch Wagon. Bought it directly from Newport. Good people to deal with. Fairly easy install with good directions but I did have the radio and speaker grill out which made things easier. In all the threads I've read about wipers I've never read a negative post about Newport's.

You can find Newport Engineering units on the auction site that includes free shipping. There are 2 different units listed for 1955 Fords, one with the stock radio and another without.

Re: wiper motor question
I got Newport wipers in three cars. One I installed with the dash installed (54 Ford) and don't remember any particular problem. Need to take the seat out for more room to work. The other two I had the dash out so it was easy.
All three units work very well.

Re: wiper motor question
So....no one knows if a 56 wiper motor will fit into a 55? If the 55 has been converted to 12 volts?

The full-sized cars had a dashboard redesign from '55 to '56 and IIRC the radio is a different design in those two years and may have interfered. Unless someone who's done it chimes in we may never know. . Last edited by dmsfrr; 01-12-2021 at 12:55 AM. |

Re: wiper motor question
Yes, the 55/56 Fords had vacuum wipers. Someone at one time mentioned that tri year scrub wiper motors could be adapted to work.

Re: wiper motor question
I have heard, or read somewhere that the '57 chev wiper motor could be adapted, but I could be wrong. I would probably go with the newport motor. all the "bugs" have already been worked out for you, and you get a warranty.
