Thanks! Not one of my strong areas either. I like to dabble in wood working. Dont really have a wood shop set up either. I seem to have put way more time into these seats that I expected. The seasoned Ash lumber is from a tree that I had taken down in the front of the shop a year ago. Pretty happy with the results of the frames and the custom springs from Snyder's. It will be a stout/ ridgid assembly for the cushion and dark blue fabric. Folks, Hope to get the pressure plate and clutch off the engine today and maybe get the engine mounted on the stand. Then I can roll it over and start review and disassembly. The goal is to get the block to the machine shop this week. Tim Waid at Valley Machine in Blooming Valley PA is very good. He is also very busy! A one man show and generally swamped with engine and head work, big and small! CAT's to Kohlers. So we move forward every so slightly on the 32. Thanks for checking in on me. As you have seen I will drag you off into the weeds of my other projects/ life also! I have these two 1932 Ford books setting here still in the pack. Scared to open them! Will lead me to more things to do on the 32! Oh yea my other wood working project is this interior walls in the shop. The hemlock is ready I just need to get some materials and get off the couch! We will have pictures too! Here is the interior material when i brought it home. Green hemlock 8 inch wide shiplap from local Amish mill in Atlantic PA. Jim, unloading the material with the F40 Allis fork lift, What a handy little unit that is too. All stickered up and has air dried for a month. Regards, Chris

Thanks! Working on a extra set. Should get the wood planed to thickness this afternoon. Then can do some lay out and assembly. Coated the wood with a layer of Spar varnish. And drilled the extra vent holes along the edge of the frame. Regards, Chris

Excellent thread on your journey with the 32! I'm partial to the big trucks and especially dump trucks. I have a 46 Ford with a Gar Wood dump. Looking forward to additional post on your progress! |

Your woodworking skills look great to me. The whole project and this excellent thread are such a fun diversion for my busy summer. Our 4 day tractor/engine thing starts Aug 3 and I'm already loading up. You have a tremendous amount of energy and what my dad called 'stick-to-it-iveness'

I work on things I enjoy, not what I really should be doing, like a new bath remodel project for the wife. I really did finish the 32 seat bases and spring assemblies! They will go to the upholstery shop today. Little steps! Roughing out a spare set of seat frames too. Of course I messed up and had to make one over. Hoping these fit in another 32 truck some day! Just some newsy notes, I matched my bases to the seat springs. Which makes the base not match the tank radius. Seems there may be several tank designs out there in the world. Here my finger area shows the seat frame and the tank are in the same line: While glue was drying. Removed the pressure plate and clutch disc. The pressure plate looks like it may work if cleaned up. Clutch disc still has some thickness to it above the rivet heads. What would you folks do clean up and use as is or replace?? Ring gear teeth are as expected for a truck with between 70K and 100K miles: Thanks to a call from David G, He walked me through the location for the stamped serial numbers. Started with just dirt on the frame, then a star appeared, more scraping and gentle wire brushing and the numbers appeared as he said they should. *AAB5028297* David also directed me to the hand steel stamped numbers on the intermediate casting behind the engine above the starter location: So we have a numbers matching truck for what its worth. Still believe the engine is a replacement rebuilt short block that came from NJ. Testing on the jib, why not? A couple gentle taps with a wood block on alternating sides of the front of the flywheel, eased it off the two locating dowels. A few more moves and the engine should be on the stand ready for review and disassembly: Must go it is very nice out! Regards, Chris

I'd be inclined to replace the clutch disc with one of a more modern two inner disc design with six small coil springs circling the hub separating the two discs which provide for a smoother clutch engagement compared to the rigid single inner disc design that is in your photo. |

Gar Wood did indeed manufacture wood hulled speedboats, which are much sought after by boat restorers, at least in the Great Lakes area. Among their other diverse product lines were fender skirts for '33-'34 Fords, etc.

There are several Garwood boats running around Lake George NY, in 2019 I was in the village for another reason and there was a boat and car show going on.

I will check into the new clutch disc design. The bed had me fooled for just a little bit as I researched the truck after I first looked at it. Galion dump bed has radius in the sides of the bed. Gar Wood beds are square. Dropped the seat springs at the shop. Should be done in the two week time frame. Next up will be the engine, and some work in the shop to get more organized. Be sure the clutch disc you get has the tabs to keep the springs
from falling out. |

Folks,
I would like to possibly remove the valves on this B engine. I dont have to but would like to learn. Can anyone link me to a thread where it has good info? I know my machine shop can do all this. But if the engine ever gets machined I would like to do the assembly work. Now the valves may be in the block when I get it back. Off to work on other projects and pick up supplies in Mankato (ref not real) Regards, Chris

Also, I'd consider replacing the ring-gear on the flywheel . . . probably not too expensive of an operation if they are available. It isn't fun having to pull an engine just to replace the ring gear at a later time.

With the right tools, removing the valves is a pretty straightforward process. With a pry bar with a C-shaped opening on the end (of the right size) you compress the spring and remove the valve spring retainer from the tapered end of the valve and then remove the spring. Because of the tapered end on the stem of the valve, you need to raise the valve as far as it will go and with a special driver inserted into the resulting space beneath the head of valve drive out the split valve guide from the top. Seeing your improvising skills, you could probably come up with your own pry bar and valve guide driver or alternatively, purchase them from Snyder's (A-6513-T and A-6500-VGT). |

Thanks! I may look at the valve removal methods. Thanks for the part numbers for the tools too. Some shots of engine rear: I did get the intake/ exhaust off today and found nuts and mouse nests! Not pretty! Needed cleaned out. Shot of my shop from the camper in the back yard. Picked up another Rigid collapsible stand for the Dewalt saw. Will use this to work on the interior wall covering project. Short term goal is to get the 32 engine to the machine shop! Regards, Chris
