Default 39 Ford PU steering

I have a 1953 engine (maybe truck engine) in my 39 puand am trying to get steering working. Seems like link hooked to steering box arm is gonna hit the pan? Are there different pans? Change pans, modify tie rod-like link under the pan, dent pan in some? Thanks for suggestions!

I've got an 8ba in my '39 pickup. Using a truck pan to solve the clearance issue.

Thanks for info! Hope one of the old pans I have fits. Is the a way to ID a truck pan? Just asking ‘cause I though it had a truck pan on it.

Thanks. I’ll try to get a photo. Doesn’t show much under the truck though.

48 or later Truck or 49 to early 51 Mercury rear sump pans and half bells are best for 8BA family engines going into pre 1949 vehicles. Later Mercury pans thru 1953 will work but the bell housings are different. The truck pumps will work but I don't know about the fan. The 49 thru 51 Mercury fan and pumps may fit better with pump adapters but I don't know for certain.

A truck pan has a large cleanout plate with the drain plug in the center of if.

Also suggest you post this on the flathead section. Not the '54 and later section that this post is under.

Oops. Thumb is too big.
Photo is of pans I have. Don’t see what seals back end, but can remove one to look.

If the pans that you posted photos of are for the engine you have then you don't have a '53 engine. Those pans are for pre '49 engines. They won't work on a 49-53 8ba series engine ('48 - '53 in trucks)

Thanks. Makes sense. Was just looking at sump position. Guess I’m off to Epay. Have several 38 and 39 engines and blocks around. Engine in truck is definitely a 53 a friend rebuilt for his dump truck pre-divorce.

I have same engine in my 39 pickup , got a drop tie rod end from Speedway (I think) and also lengthened the drag link, have no interference.

Wow. That’s good news. If I can find such a link, it will save a bit of searching and work. Thanks much Darin

I have a '38 with pick up pan with large clean out. I have interference with drag link at oil pan. Can you post a picture of your drag link?
thanks

Malpais .....Here is the Speedway link to the dropped tie rod ends.

https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speed...nds,50152.html

This GREEN pan is the pick-up version of the 8BA pan. A second truck pan slightly modified for better drag link clearance.

The pan below is '49 through MID-1951 Mercury

Pan below is MID-1951 through 1953 MERC. The Mercury pans are getting a little difficult to find, especially the internal pump PICK-UP shown in last picture. Second to last picture shows interior of Merc pan and baffle that the pump pick-up fits into.
