Default How does one open a Tire guage Casing?

Hello A Gang; yes I am still alive and kicking! Quick question please, how would I open the case on this old tire gauge, specifically the ring holding the glass in? Would it screw off, or is it just pressed on? Mine works fine, but my curiosity has the better of me, I must see inside!!! Thanks a lot, Kevin

kev
your gauge looks great
heres how to take one apart
use an old kitchen knife and put the dull side against the cover and tap with the handle of a screwdriver gently tap all the way around and it will pop right off,no threads
then gently pry the pointer off with a screwdriver
using a jewelers screwdriver take the two screws out and the cover will fall off
inside is a bourdon tube ,,as the pressure builds up it expands, and through links and gears it moves the pointer
you can see the bourdon tube ,its the flat looking arc just inside the edge,it starts at the left where the air comes in and curves to the right to engage the pointer
go to google and look up bourdon tube and it shows many examples and explains the function, better than I can

fix it till it's broke... if it is working fine, why mess it up?

this is how the reset works
as the bourdon tube expands it moves the pointer, and i guess friction holds it in place
by pushing the reset button it pushes the tube back to its relaxed position
thanks to Jim Mason for telling me how to remove the cover

Thank you all for your kind help, I knew you would help me out! Mot that was a most informative answer; I have never ever heard of a Bourdon tube ,yes I will Google that ; I see one of you ( Fordgarage) still remembers that Kev really only can comprehend things when its reduced to VERY simple terms ( and with pictures, ha ha!) so that was exactly what I needed to understand the concept,Tom W; I have been exceedingly busy all winter doing 100 eleventeen things; but spring is here and I hope to soon be back to my little A! The body is back on the chassis and I hope to be doing brakes, shocks and more assembly this year, I have only the rear fenders left to paint so I ( hope) the worst is over.
I did try to pop the back off the gauge tonight but boy its stuck on well; I might have to heed the warnings to back off before I wreck it ( Besides Mot spoiled all the excitement of finding out what would be inside!!!) Thanks again,Kev

I have the standard US Gauge [ yes it is spelt correct, not guage] without the Ford dial & with a curved nozzle but otherwise the same type. When I opened it up when it stopped working, it had the date 'Nov. '27' ink stamped within the case.
A friend who restores the Model A gauges tells me the pointer arm with 'o' at the base is '28 '29, & the squared off arm is '30 '31.

Hi TudorTomnz, the new JS says the pointer changed to round to striaght in early 29 and either style is available in that time frame.
I have a dyslexic typing style and tend to reverse lettering with a vengeance as in the word 'straight' missplelled above; sorry about that! Kev
