Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
A Fenton 2x2 head has come up for sale locally. It is in good shape except two stripped threaded holes for the fuel pump assy. I've been looking for vintage heads and an intake but prices are crazy, especially when you factor in the US/CAN exch rate. They're asking CAN$325. Seems to be worth it, andI'm not looking for perf gains. I am heading down to Heshey next month hoping to find some similar stuff, but should I jump on this first?

If a dual carb intake is what you want, buy it. There is no guarantee that you will find a better deal at Hershey.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Decent price BUT if your heading to Hershey next month Im going to have a large amount of heads and intakes for sale at decent ready to sell prices for the common names like what you posted. Theres also going to be many very rare intakes and heads but princes would be more due to the rarity. Example I have a nice used set of Fenton 8BA heads for $325.00 the intake your posted as well others similar are under 300.00 when purchased with a set of heads. Guess i should add the above prices are US dollars.

If you are NOT going to use any 8BA components ( oil filler/breather or road draft) this is about the going U.S. price for a used one on EBAY.

But you have to remember that with the current exchange rate $300 US dollars is equal to about $400 Canadian dollars. That Fenton would be about $245 US.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
That is a later example of a Fenton.
The early ones have the Fenton logo under the generator location. I have one on my 8BA and it works fine. |

So it should fit on my C69 block?

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Yes, Also be aware that you will have to find a generator bracket, as the placement of the carburetors on that manifold does not allow for the generator to be mounted in the conventional manner. An alternator just might fit, especially one of the smaller units.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Damn. It looks as though there is enough room for the generator. I need an intake that will still allow the stock generator to fit in the stock location. Why bother then with the stock generator mounting interface?

there is no room for a generator you will need an off set gen mount

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
One plus is the carbs are set equally/better over the intakes they feed.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
They donīt have the generator mount (big stud) only the fan mount (2 threaded holes)
and are offset more forward to take only the fan. |

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Excellent intake, and so are several others of the same ilk. A 1/2" riser will make it even better. In JWL book he goes through all this with an excellent chapter on tuning the 94/97 carbs, that's woth the price of the book

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
I have a Fenton like that that does clear the generator, at least with 94 carbs. It has the script between the carb flanges as in that photo. I can't be sure it's exactly the same without measuring.

Ron sit back and enjoy , I'm guessing you've played plenty. Not saying stop!
Think the 36 generator is shorter also. maybe the same for earlier yrs? But I don't think it'll work with is intake? . Last edited by Tinker; 09-16-2019 at 11:09 PM. |

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
I was wrong. My Fenton is very different - see pics.
Anyone have experience with this one How do they work? Can you run progressive linkage because one carb is in the center of the engine? |

That arrangement looks like it would have very poor distribution between cylinders.

Damn. Are they all like that if you want to retain the original generator mounting position? I believe the slingshot style works and might be better. Yes?

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
The carburetors are going to be the same size and require the same spacing on any of the manifolds. If you move the one carburetor back to clear the generator the second carb will have to be further back to get the spacing.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
I run a Fenton on a 21 stud, pumps in heads engine....having pumps in the heads makes fitting an offset generator somewhat difficult. You need to get creative. However, Zigster, with his C69A engine, could simply offset the generator over either head [his choice]. I like the fenton; although the porting is somewhat restrictive, it positions both carbies directly over the runners, nice and close.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Yes, you can run those with a progressive linkage (the front carb is the primary), but as "JSeery" says, the fuel distribution is not the best. Those things are always a compromise. If you want to run a generator in the stock position, get a 4 BBL manifold, or use a Mercury bored out to take a Rochester 2G. On an early engine, you'll have to make some modifications, but it will be worth it. (Or run a small alternator, which looks kinda weird.)

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Just what is "one of these"? It looks like a single plane manifold; how does it run? Not criticizing, just curious.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
I dunno what it is; just a picture I downloaded some time back off of the 'net. Doubt if it's single plane; I actually thought it mimicked the 34-35 'camel back' dual plane manifold, but by putting the carbs up high on risers like that [tunnel ram?], it enables running stock generator position. I reckon it'd run pretty good.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Looks almost like a 32 intake that been adapted with some kind of aftermarket 2 carb setup mounted to it.
I really like the old speedparts made by people before you could buy them easily. |

The mystery manifold above appears to have "Jack Henry" cast into it if that means anything.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
I found this older article from Hod Rod on some "performance" intakes. It seems the Edelbrock slingshot performs very well.
https://www.hotrod.com/articles/hrdp...old-smackdown/ That pic of the one from Brian, I think I have seen before, or at least some similar. From Monteray Speed Shop. If I had money, I would get one of the two in the link below... http://www.montereyspeedandsport.com/catalog/ |

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
I 'googled' Jack Henry - very interesting, early flathead speed equipment pioneer. I'd guess that the manifold of his I attached earlier, was the inspiration for others, such as the Eddie Meyer above, also Edelbrock slingshot.
Anyway, all I was trying to do was give Ziggy another option for running stock generator location with twin carbs.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
I have a slingshot on my 21. I drive with it pretty much daily. The only thing I'll say about those is they need heat. It takes way longer to heat up and run well over stock. You have to learn how to drive with a soft foot, come on too quick and its typical of lots of carb it will bog down. Im very surprised tho' I have 21hg in fact has been close to 22hg on a cold day with the setup.

Re: Fenton 2x2 intake. Good, bad, or ugly?
Check out the SPEEDWAY 910-15985 2x2 intake......designated for 8BA but easily adapted to earlier flatheads.........this intake is a great copy of the Off'y 560-1075.
Carbs are a bit close but centered ,not set back,on the motor. An alternator drops right in on '48 on back motors and a generator fits nicely on an 8BA. Brand new $219. Worth a look. Charlie ny |

Charlie makes a good point, if you can run later style pumps and pullieys, you gain a couple of inches of generator room.
