Pickup sliding rear glass.
Has anybody fitted one or the sliding rear glass kits that's available for the circa 1940 pickups? A couple of suppliers list them. I like the idea. Just wondered if there's cutting involved? Looks like there is, to the inside left and right upright window strengtheners.
Also what's the quality like? anybody confirm? many thanks. Martin. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
I saw one at a show long ago, on an F1 cab, sure did look out of place to me.
But no, never tried one. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
I bought one of Drake's windows, good quality.
Comes with pattern for glass, instructions for install were good. Only thing I didn't like was that there is no real trim for finishing it off. So I have not installed it. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
I have a friend that has a 1938 pickup with a deluxe cab (chrome grill, window trim etc) that has a sliding rear window. I agree with Mike B, they look ugly. Cab gets plenty of air flow without it so I'm not sure what the advantage would be.

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
Thanks for replies chaps.
41 picup, is there cutting involved? Martin. Mike and Bill, I see you both think they look wrong/ugly, if i have it right, the only thing that should look different from the outside will be the trim on the edge of the two glass panels, down the middle of the window? Or have I got it wrong? Like I said, I like the idea (if it looks like I think it looks) and I can never have to much airflow. roadsters are my favourite things. Now, not sure if custom made or not, but saw a '55 or '56 Chevy PU with a small back window (bit bigger though than 40's Fords) that the bottom of the window popped out, you could barely see the little handle at the bottom-center, of the window, and had to look real hard for the side supports...thing is, I didn't see how far it could open though. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
I have seen that they were an option on somewhen around '37-'38 on the Ford. Got a pic somewhere.
I asked about cutting for a reason. That is, if I gota cut stuff to make it go in, and with the above mentioned "no real trim to finish it off" I may aswell fab up a wind down windy, 3 window style, it'll look stock with it up, and I'll be all blown about when it's down. Thanks again, Martin. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
If you could build a one piece glass window that would slide up/down in a hidden track that would be cool. The rear window opening is small to start and the"stock" slider just has too much frame showing (and less glass) for my taste. If you still have the cowl vent you shouldn't need to open the rear window. Probably just make a lot more noise.
PS: The Drake unit says that it comes with interior trim moldings, whatever that is. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
The horror if it! Next thing you know, owners of old Fords will be wanting to go to 12 volts, hydraulic brakes, sealed beam lights, electric wipers, tubeless tires... them sinful things. Of course, Henry did them changes later on... even sliding rear glass. But not on early V-8s. Nosiree. Henry never had no crank-open rear glass. OOPS! He did, didn't he?
Well, even so, us owners of old Ford won't be changin' things. We'll keep the Ford stock... even if it's impractical for a vehicle that's a 'driver'. Now about ourselves... we'll add hearing aids, them new fandangled eye glasses with magnifiers built in, artificial teeth, hair pieces... maybe a 'walking stick'... and some will take to trimming our nose hair afore it reaches plum down past our chins. Change. Don'cha just hate it? |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
I have on in my '39 peeekup. I couldn't live without it. They are wonderful. The 39 and earlier do not have wing wings. By cracking the window an inch the cab stays cool. They were available for the 35 Ford and newer. Mine came with a aluminum inside trim. No cutting at all. Behind my window there is a bracket for the slider to lock into.
The local glass cutter made my window glass and installed the sliders. The kit did not have knots so I use bathroom sink faucet rubber rashers on a bolt and nut. They look fine and the stack of red washers won't chip the sliding glass. If you look in the '39 truck accessories pamphlet it shows the slider. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
Clem, vent windows on pickups started with the Bonus Built F1. So none on my '42. I want the back window to open, but want it to look proper. Got any pics of the 39 accessories? If I don't like the look of the slider, it's gonna be wind down. So it will look normal with it up.
I live in a colder climate, England, still gets warm enough to want it. Martin. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
The sliding rear window for '40 & '41 pick up was a Henry option, although quite rare.
If you reference Howard Towne's book on '40 & '41 pick ups, you can read about it there. I think there's some good factory photos in Sorensen's Commercial book as well. It'll be a lot cooler looking now that you know it's a factory option. Roger |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
See that one in the pic up there. It has overlapping glass, they side towards each other to open. That would need no cutting. The repop one i'v seen, have glass the moves away from each other to open. That I'm sure needs cutting.
I like the look of the above pic, but prefer the opening style of the repop. Martin. |

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
Sliding rear window was an option on 35-37 pickups.

I have a surround out of a 42-47 cab. Thinking about putting it in my 41.

Re: Pickup sliding rear glass.
You guys are showing some that look in place on these trucks, much better than what I have seen.
The ones I've seen looked like a modern slider, very obtrusive to look at. |
