1942 pickup question
Guys, someone do me a favour please? Just building a floor shift conversation for the Merc overdrive trans in my 42 pickup. I decided I want it this way rather than column shift that I had in there.
Now my shifter setup has the shifter placed top and middle, in the same place as the original shifter of the original trans would be. I'd like to know how long the original shifter (42 pickup) is please, from the top of the cup that screws onto the top of the shift cover to the top of the stick please. Many thanks in advance, Martin. |

Re: 1942 pickup question
My '40 is 23" from the top of the cup to top of knob.
Should be the same. |

Re: 1942 pickup question
Thanks chaps, I think a 40 should be the same, but if Mike could confirm that would be great.
That's a neat setup Bob, it yours? That looks like it uses a four speed lid? Bet it looks stock in the cab too. Sure I seen a very similar setup a few years back. Mines not that neat, used what I had sat about. The main business part is an old Hurst mystery shifter. With bent shaped and lengthend arms. Down onto some fabricated shift arms out of the trans. It will need a boot to hide the Hurst bit, but it'll do for a bit. Tricky getting the throw of the shifter and all the bits aligned to shift sweet. It works ok now, just got to gusset in some strength and make it look a bit less like a mess of scrap metal, into something slightly nicer. Martin. |

Re: 1942 pickup question
Scooder
If you come across an early 4 speed shift tower PM me and I can give you a sketch on the setup (the one in Bob C's photos)I'm using on a 49 Merc O/D transmission in my 40 Tonner. I tried using a mid 50's 3 speed Hurst shifter, but couldn't get positive shifts from it on a regular basis and the shifter was back against the seat in low and 3rd. After all is said and done I think the Tremec 5 speed might be an easier way to get the same result, but it was fun modifying the shift tower and arms to keep the truck all Ford. Les Williams |

Re: 1942 pickup question
Les, you have pm re the sketch, that is a nice looking bit of kit right there.
Tremec ain't for me in this truck, I like all the add on benefits with a BW overdrive. Runnin around town using it as a two speed auto and such like. I'd like something like a tremec in a little roaster, but with a 2.60-2.70 first gear, close ratios up to forth. Then a lazy 0.8 ish overdrive on fith. All blended with a 4.55 rear gear. That would make me smile a lot. Again thanks, m Martin. |

Re: 1942 pickup question
I used a Hurst synchro loc on a 50 merc OD in a 36 PU, It shifts great. Sure was a lot of fun getting the shift rods bent right. LOL

Re: 1942 pickup question
As of yesterday I had the throw at the shift knob at just under 8" from reverse to first and from second to top. Flicked the shifter in the truck, the huge advantage of building it up on a spate trans, and feels good. Nice n tight across the H gate and don't hit the light switch or the seat. The seat is fully forward on its adjustment (if you can call, unbolt here and bolt it here, adjustment) I'm a little short dude. So good for now. But I will scratch me up a four speed lid and do that conversation above. I really like the fact it'll look bang on sticking up through the trans cover panel. I will have to hide my Hurst bit with a boot. Cus it looks poo.
