Default Spring shackle bushings

Guys I have a question for you.
Got me some front spring shackles and bushings for the front spring and perch. Seems a little odd to me, the new bushings are quite w loose fit on the shackle pins, is this normal?
I expected them to be a ream to fit type of bush, like a king pin (spindle pin) bush is.
Am I missing something here? I'm used to the later Ford V8 rubber/steel type shackle pins.
Many thanks,
Martin.

Are you saying the shackle is loose in the bushing or the bushing is loose in the perch bolt? If the shackle is loose in the bushing, is the shackle new or possibly a worn used one. The shackle should be an easy slip fit in the bushing, not tight. If the shackle is a little loose, you are probably OK in it being that way. If the bushing is loose in the perch bolt, the old bushing must have turned and wore in the perch bolt hole. Depending how loose the bushing is, it could be a problem. If the bushing is just slightly loose, you can probably leave it a little loose, but if it is quite loose, I would replace the perch bolt. Just my opinion.

Originally the bushings had to be reamed with a 14.5 MM drill (roughly .580) Bratton's 2014 cat. pp35.The newer bushings are merely rolled light iron cylinders. I have not had to ream any bushings and they all seemed to fit well with maybe .001-.002 clearance when they are pressed in place.

It's the pin loose in the bushing, both parts are new.
I will measure the parts and report back.
Thank you,
Martin.

Many thanks
Martin.

If you just purchased them from a model A parts vendor you should call them, this was a problem not to long ago, the bushings I purchased from Snyders fitted OK.
To add to what Mitch said, if your not sure where they were made throw them away.

I'll have to find out where they came from, I didn't buy them. I'll then let the vendor know what's going on.
Many thanks all,
Martin.

Are you trying the fit on the bench,(not installed)or,after they are squeezed into place. The ones I have been using have a split in them, and they close up quite a lot after they are squashed into place.

The ones I bought from Bratton's about 20 years ago were the same way. The bushings fit the hole tight, but the shackles were loose in the bushings. I then ordered Bratton's seperate bushings and installed them and the fit was perfect. So, the next two or three sets I odered from Bratton's about 20 years ago, I ordered the seperate bushings at the same time, and set aside the kit bushings. This gave me a perfect fit with no drilling or reaming. I haven't done any in many years, so I don't know what fits what these days.

Yep, it's bench fitting but these bushings are not split, solid tube if you will.
I have measured the od of the bushings and the id of the perch. They are a light press fit, it certainly wouldn't close the id of the bush to be a good fit.

Hi Guys,

I just bought the new "American made" shackles from Snyders (A-5465-RE) and the bushes were over 0.025" larger than the shackle pins.

I found some solid bronze replacements from American Sleeve Bearing that are a nice slip fit onto the new shackle pin.

I have noticed that there are two sizes of front spring perch in the Model A Kingdom. Each take a different size shackle bushing. I have definitely encountered both, but have never been able to learn why there are two sizes. The bushings that come with a new front shackle set are too thin for the larger application.

To solve my problem I ordered a number of rear shackle bushings from Bratton's. They are the correct outside diameter for the larger perch, but are longer. I had a friend cut them down on a lathe to the proper length.

The inside diameter of both size bushings are the same size.

Hi Martin,
I had the same problem. Look at my thread of 06-03-2015 " Loose spring shackle bushes'
I sent them back.
