Default Hunting For Rattlers

Having put a new engine and a new type front engine support into my Victoria, I notice the vibration frequency has changed and created a whole new set of rattlers. After 3 days of hunting for rattlers, I have found:
>RF fender carriage bolt loose;
>RF front bumper arm loose;
>Front tool box between the frame horns rubbing against radiator apron;
>Tools & spare parts in the tool box rattling;

>Spark advance rod vibrating with a displacement that brought it close enough to #3 spark plug to cause arcing;
>Speedometer cable grommet in the firewall split, so cable vibrated against edge of the hole;
>Brake rods rattling.
There are other rattlers I have yet to hunt down!

I found one of those "diaper" pans underneath the clutch housing in my car, that was a major rattler. Also found the speedo cable was rubbing against the bottom of the metal tunnel beneath the gas tank, a visit to a local bike shop and procurement of an inner tube from their dumpster took care of that one. (For the latter, I've also seen some of that split plastic cable conduit used.)

Ted, by chance, does your front mount have the leather washer in it? A leather washer placed between the mount and the top of the flat spring solved a harmonic??? squeal on a friend of mine's pickup recently. Nasty noise. Snyders has the washers.

This is the front mopunt I put into my Victoria. It's a replica of the Model "B" mount that Float-A-Motor also copied.

I found that the door rattles most, no weatherstripping.

I don’t know, it’s been a long time, installed FAM side and rear last winter. The motor now moves up and down at the front, might try the B style front.

The mount shown by Bob in Post #7, has been shown to produce more vibrations than the standard A mount. Why change!?

Hi Herb,
You are correct re the Model "B" type mount by itself causes more severe vibration nodes especially at 30 MPH in my case. However, I am also changing to the rear Float-A-Motor mounts. I could not find a sweet spot adjustment of the original front damper, so I am experimenting with the new mount system.

Hi Bob, I have the front yoke and FAM at the rear on both my A's. I just tighten the FAM through bolt so that with my hand Ican still turn the upper cap.

Thanks for the advice the FAMs. Here is what I have done to the rattlers so far:
>RF fender carriage bolt loose. Tightened it;
>RF front bumper arm loose. I tightened the nuts on the special post bolts connecting the bumper arm to the frame;
>Front tool box between the frame horns rubbing against radiator apron. To each lower rear corner of the toolbox, I glued 3/16" thick x 3" long x 2" wide rubber pads;
>Tools & spare parts in the tool box rattling. Lined the interior of the toolbox with 1/8" thick corrugated cardboard;
>Spark advance rod vibrating with a displacement that brought it close enough to #3 spark plug to cause arcing. Added a 3" long x 5/16" diameter rubber tubing split axially to the rod, and secured it with 2 cable ties;
>Speedometer cable grommet in the firewall split, so cable vibrated against edge of the hole. Discarded the grommet and replaced it with a piece of
3" long x 5/16" diameter rubber tubing split axially to the cable.

I saw the same issue a few months back. Turned out the motor mount bolts were just snug and night tight. Tightened up the bolts and the vibrations went away.. It's worth a try.

Dick M,

You are right-on! Changing the tightness of the front mount bolts changes the stiffness of the mount and thus changes the vibration frequency transmitted by the mount. I need to find the sweet spot of bolt tightness for my application.

Hey Bob,

Is your motor and trans at the recommended 3.5° to the frame? If not, that might be adding to the issue.

Bill
