Default voltmeter reading low

On gas run, vmeter barely moved. It has worked Ok the last few months. after run, I cleaned the communicator, tightened the cutout connections, tapped the cut out. Charged the battery
I need to get 5 miles to a show tomorrow with pretty girls... Am I good to go???

Voltmeter or ammeter or both? If its a 3 brush generator with a cutout, you should see a steady positive charge on the ammeter and about 6.5 to 6 75 on a voltmeter. If its a 2 brush with regulator, then ammeter may drop to about 0 if the battery is fully charged.

Battery meter. It climbs up the scale a little but not near the level' position.

I'll take spare cutout tomorrow

If its any help, I sell refurbished original Ford cutouts. They are much better quality than the currently available repros. What year is your car?

No good guessing here you have to do some testing. Remove the field wire from its terminal on the regulator and connect it under the armature terminal screw on the regulator. Start engine and rev up for a couple of mins and your battery gauge or ammeter should go to a very high reading. What this test does is take the voltage and current regulator OUT of the circuit and allow the generator to charge flat out. If there is no high reading on your gauge then most likely the generator is faulty and will have to be removed and looked at by someone who knows what they are doing. If you dont understand or know how to test generator components then dont touch it and give it to somebody who does know about this equipment. Regards, Kevin.

Clem, It would help if you told us what car you have. Is it a third brush generator with a round cut out on top or a two brush generator with a three unit regulator on the firewall. Regards, Kevin.
