Default Re: Removing 4 Bad Drums from 4 Good Hubs

I hope this isn't steering off the thread too much.....

I have two hubs / drums that appear to be swedged on crooked...
the left front is way out of balance - when you remove the wheel, it will
rotate down to the low spot.

So - do I need new hubs and drums? - or can the hubs be salvaged?

I hate to throw every thing out and start over.

Sounds like a question for Randy.

If they appear to be crooked, then try to attach something to the backing plate or assemble some blocks of wood with a pointer using a nail to be certain they are crooked when rotated with the bearings adjusted properly. There is a possibility you have a bent hub, Randy Moss told me he checks all hubs prior to installing new drums on any hubs. I would suggest finding a shop locally to check your hubs. Proceed from there as there would be no need to ship your hubs and drums if they are bent.

Hello Brace;

Are your drums stamped steel or cast iron?

If they are stamped steel, then I suggest that you change them out to cast iron and at the same time change out the shoes to the correctly arced shoes.

If they are cast iron, then either have someone locally put them on a drum lathe and put an indicator on the back side of the hub to see if the hubs are warped. I you want to send them to me intact (with inner and outer races still in them), then I would check them for you and let you know my findings at no charge. If the hubs are good and the drums are bad, then I can put new cast iron drums on them and set you up properly.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Thanks

Randy,
I'm not sure how to tell if they are steel or cast iron. I'm assuming they are steel. I used to turn brake drums at Montgomery Wards - and of course all of those were cast.

I will send you an e-mail

Thanks

Brace

I also use a 5/8 hole saw, drill press and a little oil. Just cut the swaged portion of the stud. Stud will drop right out. 4 hubs and 8 shoes will fit in a US mail flat rate box for the cheapest shipping to Randy. Yes I also recommend Randy, he is a pleasure to deal with. Note I said 8 shoes as well. Randy arcs the new shoes with the proper linings to match the turned drums for a good price.

We install cast drums on original hubs every week. About half of the folks that try to remove the drums at home ruin the hubs in the process. Send the complete assembled units as they are. What you spend in extra fright will be saved by not having to buy a new hub.
