Re: adjustable jets
I have 3 or 4 with adjustable main jets. Takes a while to get them just perfect by "reading" the plugs for the right color. I like them fairly clean with a few black spots on the end beyond the threads. The jets each control fuel to 4 cylinders on each side of the engine. I adjust them by "reading" the front plug on each side. The front cylinders are each supplied by a differant main jet. I can't remerber but depending on whether you have an aluminum or cast iron intake manifold depends on how the front plugs are feed. On one manifold the passenger jet feeds the passenger side front on the other manifold the passenger jet feeds the drivers side front. You can look at the manifold and see where the runs go. I set them up a few times with an exhaust aynalizer, I could get them close but looking at the plugs is closer. I take a plug wrench and drive about 5 or more miles on a straight road, stop and pull the 2 front plugs and adjust the jets, spray some carb cleaner on the plug and drive another 5 miles under the same driving conditions. Once set mark the adjustments with a small dot of paint. Once adjusted you never need to readjust. if you have various sizes of fixed jets you could get them set also. G.M.

Lots of trouble and time wasted for bragging rights in my opinion. Ken ct

Re: adjustable jets
I would think a wide band AF meter would work well. Just remember one thing. The adjustment reduces the size of the installed jet. So it will lean the mixture.

Re: adjustable jets
You can lean the mixture or make heavy soot on the plugs. G.M.

Re: adjustable jets
One thing I might add is that I made some of the adjustable ones out of needle valves and modified the generic ones with a long taper so they have a real feel for adjustment. A stubby short taper won't give a range of adjustment. G.M.

Re: adjustable jets
I used to race an HQ holden here and they had to be basically stock, one trick was to use and adjustable main jet and have that controlled in the cab via an old speedo cable connected to the adjustable jet.
Just a thought, If you had that and an A/F meter you could save a lot of time. Lawrie |
