36 radio speaker
Has any of you replaced the speaker or speaker cone in a Philco radio? The cone on mine is shot and the local repair places give me a blank stare when I asked about reconing it. My speaker works but it has a really fuzzy sound. Not sure if there is something else wrong.
Thanks, Royal |

Re: 36 radio speaker
Is it one for the closed cars with the FT-9 set? They are electromagnetic type. There are shops that recone all sorts of speakers but I don't know of one that that I can recommend. Most of my stuff in later in the 40s & 50s so there are replacements available for them. There are likely other options for replacements & modifications. The old paper based cones deteriorate but usually if there is no damage to the cone or its mounting to the speaker frame, they play OK. The old radios have antique style wax paper capacitors in them that can deteriorate and badly affect the amplification quality. I wouldn't run one long without replacing all the capacitors with better quality types.

Re: 36 radio speaker
If itīs a papercone and itīs not totally gone they can be repaired with ricepaper and glue.
Whatīs bad with it the flexible surrounding or the cone it self ? |

Re: 36 radio speaker
Like everything connected to antique cars, the radios and everything else is past their service life, therefore they need extensive work to make them function properly.
It can be a very big mistake to try and power up an old radio until all of the components have been completely checked out. I have a good friend that works on antique radios and clocks on a regular basis. It is a hobby with him so his prices are very fair and reasonable. My friend has a source for old tubes, solid state vibrators and a company that rebuilds the old speakers. PM me for more info.
