Re: Now here is a real bargain!
Remember the real estate bubble of a few years ago? It burst. I wonder if collector cars are reaching a bubble price, and will soon burst. Maybe when all the rich old guys with trophy wives at the auctions get tired of filling their garages.

ALL collector cars are not increasing in value. Those that are making substantial gains are generally those that were lusted after when the buyers were young and who are now in a position to buy those cars. They change over time. With that said, I have a hard time figuring out how a 1958 FMR Tg 500 got to $285,000 The real estate bubble was caused by unscrupulous lenders making loans to everybody and anybody, nation wide, then bundling those loans and selling them as AAA investments, with little to no oversight. When the borrowers couldn't pay back the loans, they were foreclosed and the bubble burst (taking down just about everything and everybody except for the banks that made the loans ). Nothing of the sort is happening with collector cars.

Re: Now here is a real bargain!
Where on earth do people come up with these outrageous prices? Rhetorical question.

Re: Now here is a real bargain!
Wheeler Dealers did an early Messerschmitt and it sold for just a fraction of that asking price. What am I missing?
Maybe they are not far off. Sotheby's sold one for $322,000. If I were to buy a high priced car it would be a Town Car. At least you could carry more passengers, it's partly convertible, mechanical parts won't have to be imported from Germany to fix it and it can go faster. Plus you'd have money left over for a fur coat and long cigarette holder and per Ron below mink stole with white gloves. Last edited by foxfire42; 03-15-2017 at 02:34 PM. |

Re: Now here is a real bargain!
There was one in Boca Raton last month that did not sell for $200,000.

Re: Now here is a real bargain!
I guess this shows the value of a car is determined by how much people are willing to pay.

Re: Now here is a real bargain!
Watching the BJ Auction in January shows me what some people will pay for what they want, and good for them.
friend of mine is looking at a '57 Chevy Nomad wagon for 35K, I have trouble getting that number out of my head when I think back to the mid 60s and they could be bought for $100.. But if I had 285K that I wanted to spend I can guarantee that I would have a pretty nice Model A collection, because that is what turns me on, among some other things. |

Re: Now here is a real bargain!
GOOD thing it's not a Briggs & Stratton, with ALUJIMUM cylinder walls
Chevys' VEGA proved that didn't work---"Maybe" Chevrolet needed a write off, to give them a TAX ADVANTAGE????---Seems as a lot of car makers do that, from time to time. Bill Suspicious

Re: Now here is a real bargain!
I bet there are hot rodders out there who would like to stuff a Chevy V-8 into it!
Last two guys that I visited who were selling Model A stuff on Craig's List were putting V-8's in there Model A's. One was a Victoria and the other was a Coupe. I also saw a 1936 Ford for sale recently that had a great body and interior, but the owner put a Chevy V-8 in it. it would have been great with the original flat head. David Serrano |
