Default Model A Engine Number

A friend called to tell me of an engine block that came out of a '31 Roadster with the number 260WA stamped on the block. Would Ford have sold this to a farm tractor dealer, for example, for resale? If it is indeed a '31 block, would it qualify for judging as a '31?

Being from a Western Auto family, 260WA could have been a replacement engine from Western Auto ! At one time you could get anything for a model A except a frame. I feel people put too much into matching numbers IMHO

Ford sold the model A type engine as an industrial engine up to just before WWII. They were used as pump drives, air compressors, generator plant drives, and for various agricultural equipment drive engines. The companies that purchased them likely put their own numbers on them. The Gleaner Baldwin model A and NR combines had them and they had Gleaner's number stamped on.

Most helpful, señor! Could account for the Hammer's thought that the block may have been purchased by Western Auto. And, the block could have been manufactured well after the Model "A" production period.

Appreciate the response.

Look for the little diamond shaped casting mark on the right side near the timing gear covers. It would be one of the diamond blocks if so marked. They were the blocks Ford farmed out for the industrial types and replacement engines but the engines were assembled on a separate line at the Dearborn Rouge plant. They are good blocks.

Won't see the block for another week. I'll holler if there is one there, because these are indeed good blocks. Don't see too many of those.
