1952 Mercury accessories
In the '52 Merc accessory brochure they show a combination map light /cigar lighter (Or maybe a map light that plugged into the lighter socket..)
Anyone ever see one? They also advertise rear window wipers and defrosters.. Again I'll bet a dollar to a donut hole no one has ever seen that either. Quite a ways ahead of their time. but doubt the market was there 60 years ago. |

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
Here are two photos of pages in the '53 Ford Accessory Catalog;
I've never seen a '52 - '54 Ford or Merc with a rear window wiper however, I have seen rear window wipers installed on some '46 - '48 Ford & Merc Sedans. Our '53 Sunliner has the courtesy light under the dash that operates by the door and the head light switch (to use as a map light).

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
Trev, it is a O/D no fog lights but the front bumper guards are on the way.
I did find you a 52 back glass, but getting it to you would be a chore,, PM me if you think it is something you would want. Vic, My Merc has the map light as well as the auto light when the door opens,, also auto light under the hood and in the trunk. Really curious about the one listed as part of the cigar lighter |

Merc (being the more expensive car) came with a lot of standard features like an (interior lighting package) that were optional accessories on the Ford.

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
I used to raid junk yards for extra lights and goodies. My 54 Merc was lite up under the hood and in the trunk. My best accessory find was for my 56 buick: ever seen a factory purse hook? This one was in the original pouch and not installed. It screwed onto the glove box door. Clem

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
Intersting, I have a simular but older spotlight with mirror. Not plated, just painted black. Guessing it is earlier than the early 50's accessory. Picked it up at a garage sale earlier this summer, but have not had time to research it so I can properly list it.

If at any point you need to replace the lighter element in that I have a NOS element that might work. Rod

Merc Cruzer, do you have an outside mirror like the one in your post. My '54 has one identical, and I need another for the right side. Thanks : Bruce

Do you mean one like this? I thought the 54' mirror was "hooded" on the top.

I just checked the listing and they sold for $800...now that is ridiculous! |

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
I'm guessing mid 20's. It was in a pile of stuff that also had a 37 glove box clock and afew other things. Whole pile for $35, sold the clock on e-bay and it flopped only selling for $42. But still have some of the other things left. Rod

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
In 1954 there was no hood for the accessory side view mirror. It was 5-sided and attached with an Allen key to a base. They are hard to come by. They are similar in shape to the “Custom Spotlight and Mirror”. (One could also get a regular round Mercury spotlight (2 sizes) with or without an attached mirror.)
If positioned correctly the side view mirrors can be used. Here is a pic from the original Sales brochure showing the Custom Spotlight and the Side View Mirror (strangely upside down to how it is usually used). The Custom Spotlight was side specific and finding a right (passenger’s) side one is almost impossible. http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Mercury/1954_Mercury/1954_Mercury_Brochure/1954%20Mercury-26-27.jpg I hope that helps. |

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
Interesting,, It looks like the 54 is to be mounted upside down from the 2 and 3..
I jest about the left side mirror being almost worthless,, Just a far cry from the side mirrors we have today. |

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
The part number looks to be B9MB-17687-A. The generic part number is 17687. The suffix “A” may mean nothing unless there also exits a “B” or “C”, etc. The suffix usually indicates minor changes to the base part number (if they exist). The prefix “B9MB” tells more. The “B” means the 1950's (“C” would be the 1960's and so on). The “9” means the 9th year of that decade. The “M'” means the Mercury line. The “B” means a body part.
So it is a 1959 side view mirror for a Mercury. (Not all Ford part numbers for all years follow this system of designation. Also accessories often did not have Ford part numbers on them: they were often sub-contracted to other suppliers. An example would be Spotlights from Unity.) |

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
I don't think so, that looks just like the cigar lighter in our '53 Ford, except for the chrome bullet on the knob...

With that funny little toe nail over the white plastic I wasn't sure if that was ornamental or if the white part was actually a lens for a light.

The lettering on the bezel illuminates when you put the parking and or head lights on, as do the other dash knobs.

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
Well it has only taken three years but I have located both the traffic light viewer NOS and the light lighter. . No box but as new. I guess I will have to find another oddity to consume my time searching for.. Actually the rear window stuff, speakers, defroster and wiper show up with a fair regularity, but don't do much good on a drop top

Re: 1952 Mercury accessories
The rear window wiper accessory was first offered on the 1951 models since the back light was finally shaped for one to work properly. I saw parts for one of these on flea pay one time but it likely differed somewhat from the ones offered on the later models. The rear window defog was not offered that early but they did have a similar grill for the accessory rear radio speaker. It may be that they combined the two grills in one on the later cars. They must have had a fan back there to make it work. I don't think they would try to run a hose from the front heater/defroster all the way back there.
