Bogus scammers
I'm using the word bogus again because it was sooo successful last time.
If any of you want to hear about the scam that was just attempted on me and my wife to buy my model A, let me know. It's going to take a lot of typing and I'm not going to be able to use expletives so it's going to take a bunch of time and work. If you can convivce me that it is worth all that work so you can read about this scam, I’ll do it. Thoroughly pissed off, Mike |

Re: Bogus scammers
Not wanting to appear insensitive Wingski but these scamming @holes are all the same, just their technique varies. It's enough to know they tried it on and you didn't get caught. Well done on that.

We often get the call from "Microsoft" informing us of problems with our computer. When they say Windows isn't working, I just tell them that its the middle of Winter, and it's too dang cold to open them! |

Re: Bogus scammers
I have no probs with advertising and selling stuff on the net.
Do get a lot of timewasters who say they are coming and don't . The nigerian/oil workers/husband died of cancer stuff ended abruptly years ago when I sent just this one person an explicit email......with an explicit pic I wonder if it is like the charities who ring you..... You give to one and they then sell your ph number/name on . Once you tell one to F##K off, they all stop ...... |

Re: Bogus scammers
The first thing you have to realize is that all scammers are game players. They think they are smarter than you are and can beat you at whatever game they are playing. The winner’s prize being money. Your money.
A scam doesn’t usually appear to be a scam in the beginning. It appears to be a legitimate response to an ad for something you are selling. It isn’t until somewhere down the line that something appears feels fishy, and you start to wonder. Scammers are sociopaths who love to lie. The more lies they are able to suck you into the better the game is for them, and the worse it is for you. It’s almost impossible to sense a scam from the very beginning because these people (?) come across so enthusiastically. They make you believe that what you have to sell is something that they just have to acquire. Bull, they couldn’t care less for it other than to get something for free, or at least for as little work as possible. The reason why scams are so bad is that your sub-conscious is screaming like mad to get you to realize something ain’t right, and you’re ignoring it because you’ve started something and want to finish it. Greed may have a little bit to do with all this as well, but mainly you’ve made up your mind to do something after probably many agonizing hours of thought. Once that decision was made and you placed that ad, you immediately became prey. The main thing about a scam is that while it is being conducted, it is unbelievably tiring. It drains you. It makes you wonder why you ever decided to sell your car. It is almost always going to leave you with a big question. Was this whole thing really a scam or did I over-react to a legitimate buyer? The only way of knowing for sure is to be scammed, and I know no one wants that except for the scammers. I’m sure that most of you know the main warning signs of a scam. Offering more money than you asked, willing to pay for everything like shipping and all extra expenses without being asked. Well, here are a few more: not actually wanting to talk on the phone but strictly by email, changing their tune, for instance wire payment ending up being a personal check, and one of the biggest is trying to make you feel like a fool for not agreeing to something ridiculous. Don’t let scammers succeed. These people (?) are the dregs of society and are trying to bring everyone else down to their level. Just say, “No, I’m not interested.” Mike |

Re: Bogus scammers
Sorry you are just now learning about this type of scams. These have been going on for many many years, right up there with horse traders and other scams that have been around for almost as long as man has lived in towns.

Bogus scammers
I’m sorry you almost got “pulled down the rabbit hole” , but hey, YOU climbed out before you were stuck! Not everyone gets out of it before it’s to late. Takes a strong man to admit to others the predicament he got into (or almost into) so as to warn others.

Re: Bogus scammers
The call I got that was the most blatantly abusive of my credulity was the guy who was collecting for the Leprosy fund. "We must end this terrible disease now!" If ever there was an "Orphan disease" It is Leprosy in today's world! Leprosy,(Johanson's disease) hasn't been a serious problem for more than a century. I hung up on him laughing!

Re: Bogus scammers
Scams and telephone salesmen have a lot in common. You have to make it obvious from the start you have twigged what they are after.
I have found the perfect way to stop sales calls.... For example window replacement sales people. Agree immediately that you want all your 65 windows replaced in your house. One thing... the work has to be completed by the week-end as you are due in court for bankruptcy on Monday. The call is terminated their end and you don't get anymore sales calls!" |

Re: Bogus scammers
I've had a rash of calls, asking for Pat & tryin' to sell Solar Panels.----"Pat was my Wife, that past away, 10 years ago"----"Clunk"!
I STILL get JUNK Mail, tryin' to sell her Life Insurance & Hearing Aids & Medi-Care Supplement Policies. Same stuff for my Son, Gregg (RIP), who passed away 5 Years ago. They even say he is "PRE-APPROVED" for a HIGH DOLLAR Credit Card. He never-never qualified for ANYBODYS' Credit Card. He spent his Money, like a CHILD & was always BROKE! Bill Pissed

Re: Bogus scammers
When it comes to phone calls, nothing seems to stop them. I have tried playing their games, insulting them, giving false information, registering on the do not call list....everything. The calls just keep coming in. Now I even occasionally get a call on my cell phone. They are clever. They spoof area code and prefix numbers to make it appear to you that it is a local call. Now, if I don't recognize the number on my land line or if it is not someone in my contacts on my cell phone, I just let it go to voice mail. If it is someone who wants me bad enough they can leave a message. When they leave a message that tells me that they are from the IRS and that if I don't call them back immediately or an arrest warrant will be issued, I shake my head, laugh, and then hit the delete button. I have tried googling some of the numbers that they leave as a call-back, and more often than not, others seem to have gotten the same call. Well my, my, my.
I think it is interesting that my email provider can send 99% of the junk email that comes my way to a spam email folder. That helps a lot. You would think that with all the technology, the so-called phone providers would have a database of bogus phone call originators. Those guys can make thousands and thousands of calls and millions of emails in a short period of time. They are just working the numbers. It only takes that very occasional unsuspecting person to make their day. I cannot believe the stories I hear about people getting roped into sending the same scammer more and more money, all the while believing their lame stories. Always hoping for the payout, throwing good money after bad. I seem to have gotten on a soap box. The Internet has helped this and other hobbies immeasurably. On the other hand this wealth of information is way too easy to get into the hands of the bad-guys. We have to be diligent and use even more caution than mere common sense. |

Don't appear to have much of a problem with telemarketers. I just put my best official police voice on and tell them that this is the Police Emergency Response Centre. Where did you get this private number and what is your emergency. Surprise surprise they all immediately hang up.

Re: Bogus scammers
Ahh the scams - nothings changed. Worst part is they would stop if people would stop falling for them...Local paper ran a story about a lady who got the IRS scam call but actually followed through and went to best buy and bought $600 of I tunes gift cars! Seriously? How and when was a gift card an accepted form of payment for anything but a Christmas present???
I get them several times a week and if its my cell phone and random number comes up i never answer it. If they arent in my contacts list I dont want to talk to you - if you want to talk to me leave a message and ill call right back. My work phone that doesnt have caller ID i have to answer it then just hang up on them. If its a person i mess with them or if they are looking for someone that does not work here or its very obvious a scam i say ill go find them then just set the phone down and walk away.

The sad thing is that as we get older we are not able to deal with this type of deceit. I am not there yet (I am only 74) but some of my friends are.

Re: Bogus scammers
I got a call the other day from a guy that said that he had a report that my computer had been infected with a virus, and was offering to fix it for me (at a price, naturally). I told him that I didn't own a computer, to which he answered "What the f**k is that all about?". I just hung up. Same phone number called a couple days later, I just didn't answer it that time.

Re: Bogus scammers
I get called sometimes by a serious Indian gentleman who asks for Mr Charlton, he tells me he is from Microsoft and my computer has been compromised and is sending malicious spam to all computers in the known world ,even worse my computer also does this when switched off 24/7 !!! This does invite me to have a little fun . I adopt a very elderly shaky voice ( I am 78 so no problem) and tell the scammer to hang on a minute while I check with my nurse to see if indeed I am Mr Charlton today, I then shout DORIS!!! DORIS!!! in a loud aside voice and inquire . I then have to inform the caller that as I am not Mr Charlton today I cannot help him and hang up . Sometimes I advise the caller that they cannot speak to Mr Charlton, they then ask why not and I then say because he is dead, shocked silence then condolences etc etc . I reply no no no we are all overjoyed at his passing as everyone hated him with a passion and we had a street party to celebrate his passing the caller then hangs up . I had a lady scammer once who agreed to meet me at Mumbai airport and show me the sights , I was a no show .
