Am using the Edelbrock 500 but it's on a 276 cubic inch engine; think it might be a little much for a stock engine.

Tonys engine ain't a puny 276! 284 cubic inches built at considerable expense by a reputable builder I know...

Been running a Holley 1404 on my stock 255 Merc.
Has great adjustability and runs well.
The 1801 Thunder series is virtually the same carb. with added adjustability to the secondary's.
Considering that you will probably be running the carb on 2 barrels 99.9%
of the time the 1801 (to me) doesn't make much sense.

I think this is a very good carburetor, for this application. However these carbs are rich out of the box and need to be tuned #8,#11 jet sets work well. Also distributor advance curve a very important part of the equation here. Amazing the power and economy that can be found in a well tuned engine.

Can only assume (Ron, correct me if I'm wrong) both were changed.
#8= (1447 rod)
#11= (1422 jets)

In truth that was along time ago and my friend Richard did it along with a AF meter. The engine was a 276 with L-100 cam and his own Ign system. Not sure what he settled on, my present 280 has a 2GC With 52 jets, but I think it' still a little lean. I'b buy the tune up kit with the new carb. Also just put one on a 302 Ford, not sure what we ended up with.
Just to make things clear, I don't do much of this work any more, due to my eyesight. So I just sit back and take all the credit.

I have one on my Flathead, but I haven't logged too many miles on it. As others have said, it does run very rich out of the box. I just ordered the kit for it which includes jets and metering rods.
