Default '29 Model A water pumps

I know there are the original water pumps and then the "leakless" water pumps. How can I tell by looking at them in the vehicle which one I have and does the "leakless" use any type of gasket or packing?

I rebuild my own pumps just like Ford built them except I use the double lip seal in the rear bushing. So, no, in my case no way to tell the difference.
Actually when I rebuilt it totally as original it was also leakless. I used 2 lead packing rings with Mystik Jt-6 red high temp grease, and in 15 years of driving, it never leaked a drop. I only took it apart and installed the double lip seal to better ensure the antifreeze and grease stay on their respective sides of the seal.

Does it matter what kind you have if it works properly?

I have two waterpumps in a spare parts box. One is stock and the other a leakproof. With the stock one the shaft moves back and forth and would come out of the water pump. With the leakproof one the shaft does not move. You may be able to tell if the shaft moves back and forth with the pump in the car depending on the clearance between the end of the shaft and the boss in the head. Other than that, if you unscrew the packing nut and there is packing then it is a stock one. I am not sure what you will find with the leakproof pump if you unscrew the packing nut as I have never done that.
