Default Rebuilt '39 Transmission quiz. How many issues can you find?

So after 2 months of seeing this transmission on an upcoming local auction, I won with a modest online bid. I identified from the pictures posted that this was a 1939 transmission given its clutch release arm. When I picked it up the serial number confirmed my suspicions, an early in production 1939 vehicle used this transmission. Someone rebuilt it using this nifty stand and then it sat for who knows how long. After a quick soap and water rinse I've found some obvious issues and one that made me look at repeatedly till I got out an extra part and Mac Van Pelts excellent transmission book. So now the quiz, how many things can you find wrong on this 1939 transmission??

Early gears, but that can be correct for 39.

It's got the lid for the 91a gears,
got the 2-3 slider for the earlier transmission
What the inside measure for the 2-3 fork?
Minor note, missing the throw out fork.

That's some, but there's more. Thanks for your replies.

Is the rear bearing in backwards with the snap ring missing?

gearbox top is the earlier version, not double detent 39 style with the 3" fork

No, it's the double detent style but no 3'" fork in the gear box. 1937 and 1938 style I think.

Rear mount appears to be 42 - 48

Kube's got one part of that rear mount but how about the orientation?

From where I'm sitting it looks okay. No?

Looking from the pics on the Van Pelt book it's upside down, help me out if that's incorrect. Walked by it a dozen times before I realized that's not a 1937-41 rear mount.

Also missing the throw out fork. I see two detent caps and the 81A prefix on the tower so that is OK. It will need the 91A fork though. I can't read all of the serial for verification.

There are still more parts in there that interchange with the later type synchronizer than you may know. A lot depends on whether you want the 16 & 28 gear set or the 15 & 29 set for regular driving. Lincoln close ratio gear sets are available too but I've never been interested in them. The were for heavy cars with high ratio number rear ring & pinion set. (drag racing)

One way to get gears is to find an early Ford side shift type transmission used from 1940 thru 1948. These generally have some decent gear sets in them. Truck transmission with open drive do too but they have the longer main shaft that only works with them. 1949 thru early 1951 Mercury gears work in there too but overdrive the doesn't unless the car goes open drive.

I've seen folks change the mounts around trying to adapt the transmission for other applications.

Gary, It is not upside down. It would not mate flat with the trans brace if it were flipped.

I see the rear bearing in backwards, no clutch fork on the front shaft, looks like the wrong synchro assembly (pre-39 is my guess) and the wrong second gear. I don't even see any brass synchros - wrong syncho assembly, second gear, etc.

The shift fork is probably wrong as well (if it was for this synchro hub) and God only knows what is going on between second gear, the main shaft, and all the bits and pieces in the synchro assembly and assorted thrust mechanisms.

It isn't the wrong synchro assembly (actually complete gearset) or the wrong (earlier) fork.
Not all 39 trans got the improved synchros.
I bought one in excellent condition that is like that. It had a 91 stencilled on the side. I'm running it in my 33 coupe and it's a good transmission.

I'm with you Jim . . . now that I look closer, I don't see a cluster either! What a mess . . .

The cluster is hard to see from the top and especially in a photograph that may be set a bit toward fish eye settings. The front gear portion is barely peeking out in one photo. The rear main shaft bearing is installed backwards if my eyes aren't deceiving me.

Cluster gear is there, can’t get a good picture of it. Everything moves fine, just needs to be redone to make sure all is within specs and should be a good working transmission.
