Balancing 40 Ford tire
Can you balance a tire on a genuine 40 Ford wheel by indexing off the center hole? I know 35 wheels need lug centric balance.

Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
Sure you can. Just be sure to balance the wheel itself before installing the tire. A good tire change operator would balance the wheel first, then spin with tire on and adjust the tire's light side to the wheel's heavy side.

Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
I believe that John is asking if that big center hole is ACCURATELY centered in the wheel. Since that hole was stamped in that center, I'd suspect that it is NOT ACCURATELY centered like a newer machines aluminum wheel is now-a-days. DD

Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
And that's exactly the reason I told him to balance the wheel without the tire.

Alan...Respectfully, balancing the '40 wheel WITH, or WITHOUT a tire don't mean squat in this case. If you balance the wheel "hub-centric", indexing off of the factory center hole, and it turns-out that that center hole is NOT in the exact center of the five stud-mount holes, that puppy is gonna shake like a hula dancer's butt when mounted via the five studs on the car, TIRE or NO TIRE. What am I missing here? DD |

Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
If a mandrel centers on the hole, the wheel rim can be checked for concentricity with a dial indicator. If it is concentric to within a few thousandths, say no more than .004", it will balance OK. If not then the balance will be harder to gain the more it's off center. A balance machine that uses the lug studs to align it could surely be set up to do 5" on 5.5" wheels. Ford pickups used them for years.

I use a front drum from my 38, mount the rim on it, and use a spin balancer. It will not be perfect but its close.

Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
"V8COOPMAN" makes a good point, one I've never considered. I also have never run into a wheel that was so badly off center that it wouldn't balance. I believe "rotorwrench" is probably right in saying that the quality control was good enough that such wheels are few and far between. I seem to remember that back in the day, there were assemblies that "just wouldn't balance" that ended up getting replaced.

By the way, your reference to a Hula Dancer's butt dates you. The 21st Century counterpart would be a Twerker's booty. Hmm... Think about it!

Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
Ah the 21st century. I lug centric static balance wire wheels in my shop. I have 5 35 wheels that have from .025-.050 radial run out. So Henry punched out the lug holes pretty well.
I just looked at a 40 wheel and the center hole feels smooth like it would contact a cone ok. It has a lip on it but is not uneven like a 35. I agree that if it is off center it would “twerk”. I will have to talk to the local tire guy that I was going to have spin balance them. There has been good information in this thread. Ps I have found wheels with up to 1oz out of balance. Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
I use the beads in the tires on my '51 sedan. Very smooth!

Re: Balancing 40 Ford tire
Would the tire balance beads that are used on motorcycles or heavy trucks work for this application? I have a '36 (in progress) so it's not road worthy yet, but am considering this solution for balancing.
