Default Need someone locally, just bought a model T Touring

Hello

I've always wanted and just bought a 1927 Model T and know very little about Model T's almost nothing. Hoping I can get someone to put eyes on this car and tell me whats the good or bad, whats right or wrong, how do you start it, what should I do before I even try to start and how do you even drive this thing. If anyone is interested in giving a nooby some pointer it would be much appreciated,

Bruce

This is a long but good read for new T owners;

There are LOTS of local Model T Ford clubs in Michigan. Find the one closest to you and join it. This will be your best source of help and support.

How do you get the car to freewheel so I can push it in the garage by myself.
Car was just delivered, here are some more pictures.

If things are setup correct, pull the hand brake back to straight up and down. This will put the clutch in neutral. (more or less) with parking brakes off. If push come to shove (he he) take the pins out of the brake rods at one end and do same thing if rear parking brakes are dragging. Be sure to have a block or two to put behind or front, as the case may be, to keep the car from rolling on it's own.

Looks ok to me as is. If oil at the petcock and liquid in the radiator I would try to start it.

If the oil is old and dirty, change it before you run the car. Even in neutral the car will have some resistance to rolling due to some normal drag on the bands.

Forgive me for asking here, but this has been on my mind for years......what is that little door, or what appears to be a door, on top of the cowl where us Model A people put the gas? I know enough to know that's not where the tank is.

Great looking car in really good shape!

The late Ts had the gas tank under the cowl as a FORD better idea!

On Model's T before 1926, some closed models did have a just cowl vent in the same place the gas tank being under the seat. The 4 door after 1926 still had the gas tank under the seat so would have had just a vent on the cowl (you had to get out of the car to fill the tank).

The 1927 has a gas filler door on top of the cowl. Pull the parking brake halfway back to get neutral. Where in Michigan are you located. I'm in Waterford Michigan, just West of Pontiac and have a 1927 and a 1909 Model T. I would be happy to help you. Call me at 248-802-7924 Gary

I’d be checking if it had a babbit thrust washer or updated bronze in the diff … not much fun if it’s babbit and gives way. As my great grandmother learnt back in the day, and many others since have, its not a fun exercise losing breaking.

Some early 20's Overland's and Studebaker's had tanks in the firewall under/in the cowl.

How do you go about seeing if it has babbit or bronze thrust washer?

You have to take the differential apart.

In the olden days they had it towed to the nearest Ford dealer and payed a few dollars when it broke, but today it's worth a look if you plan on worrying about it. Just make sure to check when the rear axle gets maintenance.

Order the front end/rear end rebuilding book from the parts suppliers;

https://www.modeltford.com/model-t-parts/books/
While you are at it, order the Service Manual and copy of owners' manual that covers your year.
