16x6.00 Rims
I have a '47 and '48 Ford and both are missing their spare tires. Anybody know where I could get a 16x6.00 Rim? Yes, I know this would best be addressed in The Swap Meet but, since this is first I've logged in in about 5 years, I don't have the prerequisite 10 posts to post there and, for some reason, I don't have permission to reply to the adds that are already there.

16" x 6"... By 4 1/2" perhaps? How are you measuring the width?

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
Timely post. I just bought a rim for a spare tire yesterday for my 42 and it measures 4 1/2 inches. When I look in the "green bible" it lists the 11A 1015 rim for 41-48 cars at 4". It then lists 8C 1015 for 42-47 commercial with a 4 1/2 width but compatible with 600 X 16 or 6.50 X 16 tires. Appears to be same bolt pattern but I haven't tried it yet. Anybody have any experience with this?

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
I am no parts # expert, but I believe '40-early '41 16" rims were 4". Late '41-'48 car and I believe '48-'49 F-1 P/U's had 4.5" 16" rims. To confuse it even more, Lincoln Zephyr had a 16" X 5" rim that is very desirable to hot rodders for rear runners.

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
From my experience, when looking at the inside of a bare wheel, the ones with the drop center being square are generally 4", and the ones with the drop center having a slope on one side are generally 4 1/2". And, later pickup wheels that are 5" are quite a bit heavier when you pick one up.

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
I guess I should have said: rims for 16x6.00 tires. I've never checked the actual width of the rims (never occurred to me). Of course, since all my rims have tires on them, it would be difficult to measure them.

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
So, where and when did the 15 x 5 rims (with "innie" nubs) come into being?

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
Well, that beats up my theory, square drop center, yet 4.5 wide. That wheel looks in good shape.

Generally & for the most part, your theory is correct. First pic is 4" wide, and second pic is 4-1/2" wide. One more exception is the 3-1/2" wide 60 HP wheel of 1940 at BOTTOM. They have the square drop center. Coop Last edited by V8COOPMAN; 02-18-2023 at 08:17 PM. |

cas,,, I'm guessing that a 4.5" wide wheel with the vertical drop center is probably for a '40-'41 Station Wagon. .

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
I've got a ton of old Ford steel wheels and I've never seen a straight dropped rim that was 4.5" wide. My understanding was the straight drop was a 1940 wheel, then they made the taper dropped 4" starting in 1941. But if a straight drop was made in 1940 for a woodie, then that's a pretty rare wheel so that's probably why I've never seen one.

Re: 16x6.00 Rims
I've never paid much attention to see if wheels were innies or outies. If I have time this weekend I'll pull some off the rack and see if I can narrow down a timeframe or size comparison for the two varieties.
