Coughed, sputtered and stalled
I took my '30 Model A out for the first time this Winter and, although it started right up, it bucked, and hesitated when I wanted to accelerate in second gear. It then coughed, sputtered and stalled a few blocks from my house. At first, I couldn't get it started again. I checked the points, it has some gas in the tank.
Question is, is it bad gas, bad condenser, or what. After about 15 minutes, I was able to start it up again and get home. Now that it's in the garage, I can trouble-shoot the car. I'm interested in opinions from some of you, who are a lot more knowledgable than I. Many thanks. Rog |

How long has the gas been in the tank? How much was in the tank? Was it treated with stabil or something like it? Ck your fuel flow. JMO Paul in CT

raprice,
More than likely(I would think it's COLD in NY), that the engine is lean. Dudley |

Re: Coughed, sputtered and stalled
Check your flow of petrol to the carb. Could be a partial blockage.
I've had similar issues which trned out to be crud in the tank partialy blocking the line. If I let the carb refill it would start OK, then would fart, miss & cutout underload as the carb emptied. Mike. |

Re: Coughed, sputtered and stalled
Thanks guys. The tank is between 1/4 and 1/2 full. I did put Stabil in the tank last fall. Yes, it's cold here on Long Island, but today was in the 40s. My thinking is that, perhaps there's some crud in the carb. That's where I'll start my search. What confuses me is the fact that it started right up the first time I cranked the starter.

Quote:
It started right up because you choked it and it was running on the richer idle jet. When you wind it up in 2nd gear you start pulling fuel through the jets and the crud blocks one of them off. I have seen this before on cars that sit for a while.

Re: Coughed, sputtered and stalled
Before I put the inline screen in the gas tank I used to get this too often. Always crud clogging a jet like Jim said.
