33 and 34 ford tudor sedan
Can I put a 33 tudor door, door on my 34 tudor sedan? Can't find a 34 driver's side door for my tudor sedan.
Thanks Bob Graff |

The door will fit, but the window riser stuff is different. Mounting holes for the riser do not match both years do to the smoker window on the 34, and the window "cover" ? part on the back of the opening that a 33 door does not have.

This is the rear part of the window opening on a 1933 Ford closed car. |

By comparison, this is the rear part of the window opening on a 1934 Ford closed car. |

Re: 33 and 34 ford tudor sedan
This is where the two years differ. This filler piece was added to the windows on 1934 Fords. When the window is fully wound up, if you continue winding, the glass will then wind back for extra ventilation along at the front. The window glass on 1934 Fords is shorter than on 1933 Fords, and this filler piece compensates. Hope that these pictures help. |

Re: 33 and 34 ford tudor sedan
Good photos mercman, thanks for that. I'll add some more to the story.
My 34 3w was built from a wreck that laid on its drivers side in the wilds for decades. The drivers door held water and was junk. The guy I bought the car from had a 33 door that had the top cut off for a "coupster". He has better slicing and dicing skills than me, so I said ok, build me a door and I'll buy the car. At the time, both of us did not realize the inner panel is different. I went ahead with bodywork and paint, not knowing this. Once done, time for windows, and the riser locations are different. If you knew this in advance, it can be corrected on some saw horses with precise measurements. I was doing it on the car with a finished door and quite angry about it ! You can add on the 34 rear cover part easily, its been done, but depending on your skills, finding a 34 door would be best. Happy motoring |

Re: 33 and 34 ford tudor sedan
Good point Karl. I think the stamping for both styles of latch is on my door, but you would have to install the threaded bosses where you want them. The front edge of the doors are the same. In my case, I had to move the hole for the crank, and...I forget, but I think some of the mount holes lined up, and some did not. Those that did not, also landed on a stamped strengthening rib, so I had to shim the riser base to make a solid mount. It was a dilemma for sure !

Not mentioned yet are the earlier 33 doors that take the 32 type regulators
This type regulator has standoff [ spacer] nuts for mounting The inner panel of door is flat where the regulator screws are. Rest are dimpled where the regulator screws are . Regulators do not have standoff nuts. |

Re: 33 and 34 ford tudor sedan
This story reminds me of when I did my 34 sedan delivery. I was quite happy with the Dearborn Blue paint I put on it and when installing the latches noticed that while both doors were 34s, one was an early "front latch" and the other was a normal center latch. I was able to put a center latch on the front latch door without a huge hassle but if you look at the pictures of the car I started with in my MISC album, it seemed at that time to be easily delt with and no big deal. It was my 1st 34 and i had no idea there were 2 different versions of the doors!

Re: 33 and 34 ford tudor sedan
I recall that there are two types of front latches 33/34. and they LOCK in Opposite directions! I reached over the lock the pass door at speed and it opened!! I hung on to the door and pulled over.! Lesson learned. Drivers door early '34 latch- Pass door '33 latch. Newc

Re: 33 and 34 ford tudor sedan
Yes there are several differences in early viruses late doors and their stamping, window regulators, latches, window moldings, glass size, glass channels etc. The differences make it hard for a parts manufacturer or aftermarket sheet metal stamper to put out parts that are exact for the year or month of Mfg. of the different vehicles. This results in extremely high prices for original parts. Hope the new 33-34 Ford V8 Club restoration book will clear up time lines and various models that used the parts. I do not envy David's job of putting this new restoration book together.
