Default 39 Ford pickup transmission (tiny hole)

Hey guys, Noticed a leak coming from my transmission. (I know they all leak lol) question I cleaned off the case and there is a tiny hole between the drain plug and the front of the transmission. I noticed some fluid coming from the hole any one know what that hole is for? Thanks

There should not be any holes in the area you describe. Can you get a good, well lit close up shot of it?

Mart.

Is the drain plug from the motor or trans ? If your referring to the motor drain plug then it's the hole under the flywheel.

not supposed to be a hole there. it really should not matter, but the oil is coming from the transmission. does it work proper? checked the oil level lately? it would have to come out to get fixed

Maybe someone drilled a hole once for a wisebone braket , From Bling . That hole is in the bell housing .

yes, and i myself have drilled there for a wishbone bracket. the popular one to put a v8 tranny on a model a is a good idea, but i thought it was to wimpy and made my own that utilizes 4 bell housing bolts, and one in the trans case like this one, as opposed to 2 bell bolts and no bottom bolt to the trans. lot of grinding to shape that to fit a v8 trans case.

Measure the hole, find the next size up pipe thread, drill to suit, tap it and fit a pipe plug. You may get away with 1/16 npt or may have to go to 1/8.

All sizes for drilling and tapping are available online.

Should be an easy fix if you have (or can get) some basic tooling.

Mart.

Like cas3 said. The hole appears to be on the dry side of the tranny so it shouldn't make a difference, I'd just leave it be. If the oil is leaking out of the front of the transmission and this extra hole is plugged the oil will just run forward and leak out of the weep hole in the pan anyway. You need to fix the leaking seal.

If I wanted to cap it, I'd just tap it for the closest bolt size (if it isn't already) and put a bolt in with some sealer or a lock-o-seal washer. It must have been drilled all the way up into the bell area just below the throw out fork. Oil in that location will generally still find a way out through the bell housing somewhere.

^^ I looked again and yes, it does look to be in the clutch area. It can probably just be left as it is, or maybe drilled and tapped and put a bolt in it.

Weird.

Another possible explanation for the hole: access to the flat headed pin which holds the clutch release fork onto the release shaft. Allows for driving out the pin from the bottom and/or peening over the pin after installation.

On a different transmission I do rebuilds on it is recommended that you add an access hole in the bellhousing area. Sounds like that could be similar here.
