Short tire life explained?

I, for one, am all for re-cycling. If this reduces the cost of tires at the expense of tread wear, I would welcome it, especially for my old cars. I have replaced too many 10 year old tires that look like new. Hopefully, we would still have the option of buying different types of tires at different prices levels and quality.

Michelins are already the fastest deteriorating tires made, can't imagine they will get better from this.

Michelins are garbage today they cheapened them up BIG time. The set that came on my wife's 2020 Ford Escape crapped out at just a little over 40,000 miles. They were cheap tires.

Michelin sells by name today but don't fall for their crap tires.

The Service Mgr. at the Ford garage where we do business told me stay away from Michelin. Ford was running deals on tires last month so we got a new set but a different brand. Continentals are German made and have a 75,000 mile tread life expectancy. We got a little better deal on Yokohamas, he recommended them said they are one of the best tires for the money, and had a 70,000 mile life expectancy. Plus made in Virginia at a Steelworker's union shop.

40K on a set of tires was pretty good in the old days.

Tread wear of any modern tire after 40K miles compromises traction and braking unless you live somewhere where it never rains or snows.

I have Michelins on my F-150. Got 55,000 out of the first set and will probably get the same from the second set which currently has 50,000 on them. I thought I was doing pretty good with the Michelins. I've been dealing with this independent tire dealer for over 40 years and he's never steered me wrong yet.

I think some people have unreasonable expectations and don't realize that there are a variety of tire types. General all-season, grand touring, and sports car tires are all going to have different tread life and wear at different rates because of their differences in tread compound and construction.

Some 20 or more years ago when buying new VW's, they came from factory with continental all-weathers' and at that time they seemed to me to be superior to other brands for durability and handling. They still sell (a not too cheap) a highly-rated all-season.
