Rear brakes ‘40
Rear brakes were rubbing. Anyone see a known issue? Just this side, and they look like they were assembled right

Re: Rear brakes ‘40
a couple thoughts, if you grab the axle, does it move in and out much? this shows wear on the inside of the diff. maybe not gonna die soon, just wear. they do make a shim to put on the axle to space the drum out more. most times i see this its the drum hitting the backing plate. yours, looks like the shoes hitting the bumps in the drum. it also looks like the shoe is wider than the lining. if you have a lot of axle movement, try a shim. if not a lot, i would be tempted to grind a little off the shoe, or the bumps in the drum. but, thats me being cheap. dont get any grinder snot in the bearings!

The side of the front shoe was rubbing the drum? Is that hold-down clip in the center of the shoe in the correct position? Looks a bit "off" in the pic.

I agree with the shoe retaining clip is bent. Is the brake shoe retracting spring installed properly? Cracked rubber boot on the brake cylinder? I do not see the clip that retains the hand brake cable spring so it does not enter the cable tube. What hardware is the pivot of the large hand brake lever, hard to see looks like a hex head??

Don't grind on those "bumps" that have been kissed by the shoes. Those hold the drum together. Only 40 drums have this so those are original or had been replaced with 40 drums. Later drums can be substituted if the ones you have are worn way over .060
New shoes and fixing the clips that hold the shoes may take care of this rubbing. I like that you are getting on top of the important safety issues. |

Re: Rear brakes ‘40
Is the shoe that is rubbing not pushed over the edge of the backing plate and sitting on the raised pad where it should be or riding on top of . Has some body welded that pad and made it to high ?

Is it just me or does the grease in picture 3 look silver like it has a lot of metal in it ? How does the bearing look and the bearing race on the axle housing ?

Re: Rear brakes ‘40
Here's the way a correctly installed 1940 Ford stock rear brake set up looks when properly installed. Brake shoes are 1 3/4 in wide. Could the cracks in the rubber wheel cylinder caps be a source of your problem due to leaky wheel cylinder?

Looking at your original photos of the rear brakes, it looks like the wheel cylinders and shoes are not assembled on the backing plate correctly. On the Lockheed system, the long brake shoe goes on the leading (toward the front) side and the short shoe goes on the trailing (toward the rear) side of the backing plate. The big end of the wheel cylinder should attach to, and move the front shoe and the small end should attach to, and operate the rear shoe. Yours appear to be just the opposite. I don't think this has anything to do with you rubbing problem. As others have said, the clip looks to be bent which is probably the cause. |

Re: Rear brakes ‘40
I think KGS hit a home run. Long shoe to the front. Big dia. of wheel cyl. to the front.

Re: Rear brakes ‘40
I didn't notice that the wheel cylinder was on the wrong side, probably both. Nice catch KGS. Should check the fronts and install all 4 new ones correctly.
