Re: 8ba engines
The valves/springs/keepers changed to the rotator type in '51. Check the rear vertical face of the block next to the oil pump drive for a casting number (inside the bellhousing circle).

Re: 8ba engines
Well, I'll probably get tromped on but as I understand '49 doesn't have a fuel pump rod bushing and '51-53 have "1BA" embossed on the back of the block inside the lifter galley.

Re: 8ba engines
I have build a couple 48 pickup 8BA engines, they didn't have a pushrod bushing, also had 1/8 pipe plug on the back of the block so they could drill a small hole through the pushrod bore into the main oil line to lube the pushrod. Also had heads studs instead of head bolts. Seems there was a couple of other thing on the first 8BA style that Ford was trying out before installing 8BA in the 49 cars and trucks. Walt

Re: 8ba engines
Yes, I have seen the small diameter pushrod and no bushing in the early 8BA style blocks.

'49 is blue, 50-51 is Bronze and later are Tangerine/orange. trucks were mostly red.
