What kind of primer and paint should I use on a repaired steering wheel?

Primer may not be necessary unless there is bare metal involved or you need to fill minor imperfections but any good epoxy primer would hold up. I use single stage polyurethane paint. If it looks too shiny then use it a while. The shine will decrease with use.

I'd avoid putting on too many coats. It adds up pretty quick and makes the wheel grow.

Hi Herb,

I used a two component primer. Then came the 2-component epoxy paint that is also used in this country for trucks. The result is still good after 1 year.

Thin coats of primer and paint. I usually use epoxy primer an Enamel with a hardener.

I had pretty good luck with Krylon rattle can "Fusion" It's designed for plastics.

Wipe it down with a good paint prep or rubbing alcohol before painting. I did not use a primer and was happy with the results of using Black VHT engine paint... Chap

I've had decent luck with acrylic lacquer . The cracks eventually come back , no matter what I use for a filler . For a good job , I've found it best to go ahead and replace the steering wheel with a new repro steering wheel .

I repaired the broken, missing and cracked parts w/bondo, sanded, wiped it down w/alcohol and sprayed it with rattle can enamel. Looks good to my old eyes.

I used bondo and it filled the cracks and gaps nicely .. After a fairly short time it became obvious that cracks had been repaired .

I had the same problem. Either the bondo shrunk or separated from the wheel. It went from very nice to very amateurish looking!

I’ve used devcon epoxy for cracks and minor voids
Then used a two part paint
Actually DP 90 will work some like a glossy finish...I don’t
Clean it well whatever u use

For the Early steering wheel I used Rustoleum red primer. I tested it against the original color wheel and it seemed to match perfectly.

I use S.E.M.S rubber bumper paint, it looks good and holds up good.

It would help if you mentioned which steering wheel you have. I have repaired red '28 wheels by filling cracks with Super Glue and fine dust from another red wheel. After that, I simply sanded the wheel and polished it with brown shoe polish.
