possibly changing from woven brake linning
hey barners, I have woven brake linings on my 37 fordor that were done not to long before i got the car. I assume it was done that to keep original. i have adjusted all 4 corners a few times, and think i have got them about as good as it gets. did ford use woven because thats all there was in 1937 or was because to make the drums last longer. i was wondering if the bonded brake shoes will fit in my orig backing plates? im sure the bonded linnings will wear the drums but stop a whole lot better is this correct? tom

I wish I knew the answer but I have read the woven provide better braking, which is a good thing.
Do you know where to get the woven? We’re having brake problems on a 38 Tudor (as in almost no brakes). I think 37 & 38 have similar (cable) brakes. |

I have a gut feeling that woven linings provide better stopping with less effort than bonded linings.

I do too. Wovens were recommended for older motorcycles with Lockheed style mechanical brakes for that very reason. I think FlatHeadTed still offers bendix self-energizing conversions (floaters) for lockheed-style mechanical brakes that greatly improves stopping power with even less pedal effort. |

Re: possibly changing from woven brake linning
Stay with woven .My '33 didn't stop worth a darn with the new bonded linings.I couldn't even lock them up.I was going to change them out to woven but ended up selling the car and included the woven set .
ThirdGen stocks the woven for 37-38 Fords. Last edited by deuce lover; 07-04-2021 at 07:01 AM. |

Re: possibly changing from woven brake linning
as i said check with your supplier as to which lining they supply most will supply a hard lining as standard as it will last longer but requires more pressure to stop [great for power systems not so with manual system] They should be able to provide a softer option .Factory woven linings are soft so work better but dont last as long and dont wear drums anywhere near as fast its all a trade off

I believe floaters are available for 37-38. If so that should be a grea upgrade.

My suggestion is call JG Brake Drum Reline and have him redo your shoes. He has a great shoe material. Great guy to deal with. He also will reline any make drum.

Re: possibly changing from woven brake linning
Kurt in NJ you are correct about the floaters. the big 1937 ford book says so.

My early 38 didn't. Maybe it was an option? Jack E/NJ
