Went to test my extra starter (just acquired) and the sparks flew. and never would run.
Where do I look first. Thanks for thoughts I am using the armature in another starter Last edited by coup34; 04-21-2021 at 10:36 AM. |

Re: starter, shorted out
Check the post to make sure it is tight and not contacting case. It has to be insulated or it will do what you are experiencing.

Re: starter, shorted out
Confirm that the armature shaft turns freely within the body of the starter; a stuck/frozen armature will act like a short.
Pull the cover band off of the commutator area and inspect for brushes that are not down in their brackets, and/or copper lead wires that are touching the case. |

Re: starter, shorted out
marko39 has said to check the post. Further to this make sure the sheet metal band that covers the slots is positioned correctly and not shorting the post out. I had this problem recently and had to reposition the shield. It was shorting against a washer on the post.

Re: starter, shorted out
Could you explain exactly how you are testing this starter motor. Is it on the work bench or vice and connected with heavy jumper cables. Connections have to be good not just touching by hand. 6 or 12 volt ? Regards, Kevin.
