Friend of mine found a couple of old Gleaner Combines with what he says are Model A Ford Power Units.. Did they just use Plain Jane Model A engines or are they different internally.. Its a couple Hundred mile jaunt so It will be a bit before I can get up there to check it out.. If he emails me some pics I will post on here.. Thanks for any info anybody might know..

I will be excited to get some pictures of the powerunits.. Hope I can get em bought for my Model A Project.. Parts are parts..

Just watch out for cracks! Combines always ran in a self-created cloud of dust (grain chaff) which would clog the radiator or the screen in front of the radiator and overheat the engine. Farmers, being a very creative bunch, added all sorts of screening, ducting, etc. to try to keep air flowing to the radiator, with varying degrees of success. Sooner or later, you'd just let 'er boil so you could get the harvesting done. Also, a combine is obviously a warm weather machine so never saw anti-freeze, just hard water and a "I hope I remembered to drain the combine radiator before it froze last night!"

My Dad has fond memories of the Gleaner they used on the farm during the 1940s. He said they always ran that Model A engine wide open. By evening, the exhaust manifold would be glowing cherry red, and the engine would be running real smooth.

I say tow it home and restore it as a combine. Neat yard art if you have a big enough yard.
