The reason it starts to leak above 3/4th is because when the tank is 3/4th full the gas starts to reach the gauge and its gaskets. You may notice that as you get above 3/4th of a tank, you can see the gas through the gauge (it is splashing around the glass lens in the gauge). To avoid a problem, many (not all) folks just don't fill the tank to full. I tend to go to 3/4th of a tank unless I am about to go on a long trip where I know I am going to be using lots of fuel.

If you are afraid of running out of gas, put a 5 gallon can full in a trunk you can put on the back of your rig.
