Default Bent starter armature shaft

What happens when you have a starter armature shaft that is not true? Can you straighten it or do you scrap it? When you look in Bert's Catalog they say that if you want a rebuilt one the core you send should not be bent.Any comments?

Thanks, Marc

I put mine in a lathe and straighten it. Usually what bends one is someone tried to start the car with the spark advanced and it kicked back and bent the armature.

Straighten it ---I have done many, at first with a wood mallet, now I have a press ---I have also used a large vice and a pipe

A large lathe works well as the vise - you can spin it to check your work.

I have straightened mine. I made a jig to do it. It was easy and the jig I made worked real good. When I pretty it up a bit I will post a couple pictures. I threw the question out to see the opinions of others on the subject....thank you

I made a tool from steel channel to straighten the armatures. You turn the armature and watch the flat washer bob up and down, then tighten the nut to pull the shaft high spot down.

Gees Tom, that is very similar in design and theory to what I came up with.

used a cheater pipe extension, then checked for deflection by rolling the armature on a flat surface.
I like tom's machine better.
