Default Mountain brakes?

Picked up a set of what the guy called "mountian brakes" at a swap meet today. The backing plates that came with it look identical to the stock model a backing plates. Are they? And do they use the same wheel bearings as the model a? I can also see why they're called mountain brakes from the spaces in them which I guess keep them from getting hot. Do they really help with the braking vs. stock steel drums or cast drums? Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes, they will help because they are cast iron, The holes help with cooling, but are covered by the wheel hub. The brakes and backing plates are the same. Did you get the correct 11" size for the Model A, or the later 12" size?
