Remove window trim?
Thanks all for the input on brake drums. I decided to start on the '30 Murray Town Sedan with a bit cleaner job - rebuilding the door windows - felt channels, rubber, free up (or replace as needed) the regulators. I understand (from somewhere) that the general process is
But I got stuck at #1. I've removed all the screws, freed up the trim by running a thin blade all around, and the trim moves. But I can't get it out of the opening, it's almost like it's tapered the wrong direction. Are the sides/tops different pieces than the bottoms (they are in my '30 pickup) or is it a single structure? HELP! (BTW, once I get the trim out I'm going to try to save the woodgrain. It looks pretty good but is covered in crud.) Thanks, folks. JayJay Last edited by JayJay; 12-15-2020 at 09:50 PM. |

Re: Remove window trim?
Mine is one piece. They may just be stuck and need a little persuasion.

Re: Remove window trim?
Sometimes there are small nails or brads in the corners
At least there are on some models |

Re: Remove window trim?
I don’t know about a Town Sedan, but my ‘29 Tudor had 2 screws under the upholstery (yellow circle). Other than that, it kind of stubbornly snaps in place. As Mike said in post #2, it may need “persuading.”

Re: Remove window trim?
Jay Jay. Many of us would be very interested in good pictures of the wood grained pieces that you have. Very close pic and the backside would be very helpful too.

I'm hoping to get the window trim off and the pull handles (nickel) removed to see what the "original" looked like. I'll shoot photos of that when I do. It even has all three window shades in pretty good shape. Missing one pull tassel and some of the side guide ropes. Both assist straps are there, also, but one needs a new cover. Gotta hit my local resto upholstery shop to see if they have any fabric. Right now the goal is to get the windows fully operational. JayJay Last edited by JayJay; 12-16-2020 at 01:57 PM. |

My '30 Briggs Town Sedan has a hole in the dash also. I have seen several others with the same hole as I have. I have never been able to find an explanation for the hole. I'll post a picture when I get out to the garage a little latter. |

Re: Remove window trim?
Y-B: Right hand side. It's a bit irregular in shape like it was filed, not drilled. Or drilled with a dull bit. About the right size for a small toggle switch but no evidence that anything was screwed through it.

Re: Remove window trim?
Here is a picture of my dash hole. Obviously there when dash was painted. Approximately in the same spot? I have seen others. Strange...

Re: Remove window trim?
Yeah, that's a very similar location. Judging from the rough edges I'm pretty sure mine was added after the dash was painted. Yours looks to me like it was punched, mine is definitely drilled. Poorly. Oh well, one of Henry's little mysteries. (PS - nice woodgrain, did you do it yourself or have someone do it?)

Re: Remove window trim?
OK, mystery solved.
On the Town Sedan there is a trim piece on the door below the window surround garnish. That trim piece is held to the door with two brads, independent of the window surround. The window surround is a sheet metal channel, and what was happening was that as I pulled the window surround out the channel caught under the heads of the trim piece brads and got stuck. Once I figured that out the solution was easy - put a putty knife between the surround and the trim piece, move it against the brad, and "persuade" the putty knife to lop the head off the brad. Same way you remove asphalt shingles from your roof. There were also much smaller brads holding the upper door upholstery to the wood door frame that caught the channel, but those didn't put up as much of a fight. Thanks all for your help, and encouragement that a bit of muscle might be necessary. Once the trim was removed exposing the rest of the door was trivial. Lots of wood in that door (all in really good shape). Mud wasp nest was not OEM, I suspect. I also found a piece of rubber moulding that I'll post and see if anyone recognizes the shape. JayJay

Re: Remove window trim?
Something like this would explain the "mystery hole" in the dash many have reported. It's a carbon pile, basically a high-power variable resistor, connected between generator third brush and field. I'd be skeptical of using one; they can get pretty hot.
